Mother’s Day on a Tray

When it comes to Mother’s Day, simple doesn’t have to mean boring. I recently read a poll that claimed moms no longer appreciate traditional gifts such as flowers, chocolates or breakfast in bed. Obviously, none of the poll respondents have experienced a gift-less Mother’s Day. There’s a lot to be said about getting something rather than nothing. If you are looking for a last-minute idea to make mom feel like a queen today, then consider whipping up the following, putting them on a tray and serving them up with hugs and kisses: SUPER SWEET FRENCH TOAST Ingredients: 1 loaf French … Continue reading

Preparing Emotionally for Mother’s Day

So I am beginning to emotionally prepare myself for Mother’s Day. Every year I try to not have too many expectations and yet despite that, I always end up feeling disappointed in some way. Maybe it’s really just me or maybe it’s just that my children truly don’t grasp the importance of this day to me. Maybe I shouldn’t make Mother’s Day to be of such importance. Maybe I should just appreciate the fact I am a mother and leave it at that. Maybe… But I would be lying to myself if I tried to pretend that there is a … Continue reading

Thanksgiving at Our House Part 2 – Our Family Table

Yesterday, I wrote about one specific item that will be appearing on our Thanksgiving table and the story behind it. We all know that one turkey does not a complete Thanksgiving dinner make. There will be many other things on our table this Thursday, and thanks to my wonderful family not all of them are coming from my own kitchen. Part of the family dynamic that has been emerging since my husband and I joined forces to start our own little family (and even before that) is a spirit of helping each other out. Whether it is my parents, his … Continue reading

What Do You Cook from Scratch?

Boy that supermarket makes it easy on a modern family who needs to eat. There are all sorts of dinner kits and ready made items. But it wasn’t too long ago that families didn’t have these things. Families made practically everything from scratch when it came to meals. You might be surprised to know that some food that we consider to be basic staples are actually convenience foods. So, I was wondering, what might we make from scratch the way that our mothers or grandmothers did? Getting back to making some basics will save a lot of money off of … Continue reading

Autumn Recipes: W is for Wild Rice

Welcome to October! Let the holiday countdown begin, right? I say that with a twinge of sarcasm because to be quite honest I am still lamenting the fact that our local pool closed a few weeks back. As for preparing for the holidays, well, that’s so way off my radar it’s not even funny. However, I realize that there are some of you who are in full-on holiday mode—-be it Halloween, Thanksgiving or (gasp!) Christmas (I know a gal who completed her Christmas shopping last weekend… we are no longer friends… just kidding) so I thought it would be helpful … Continue reading

Nine Months On, Nine Months Off

We’re constantly bombarded with the images of new celebrity mothers who, though they porked out and really put on pounds during their pregnancy, seem to have lost every ounce of baby weight within their first postpartum month. Then, when asked their weight loss secrets, they demur “Oh, I’m just so busy with the baby”. Well, I have one thing to say to that: SHENNANIGANS! You can’t gain 70 pounds, have a baby and then drop the remaining 50 pounds in a month without doing something pretty special. A few are honest about their battles with baby weight and I find … Continue reading

A Month in Review

I know, I know. I’m supposed to do a week in review every week. That’s the whole point. But I got super busy (especially on weekends when I usually write the week in review) and missed it. Now I’m faced with a dilemma: skip the week in reviews that I missed. . .post them separately, or do them as a month. So here I am, bringing you the month in review. (I do have to mention another reason I am behind on my weekly reviews is that I’m working on a BIG project for the food blog! Shhhh. . .don’t … Continue reading

Make Mom Feel Special

Mother’s Day is just a few short days away and I wanted to take a few moments to remind husbands that it’s a day to make the moms in your life feel special – this means all moms: Your Mom Your Wife’s Mom Your Wife (even if she’s just pregnant with your first child) Your sister who’s a mom All moms Something happens to wives when they become moms. Sometimes, it’s hard for husbands to cope with this. The change of a husband into a father is a far more subtle transition. Perhaps it’s because Dads have the luxury of … Continue reading
