Online Resources for Baby Names

There are a couple of things that parents can expect when they are expecting a baby, whether it is their first or their fourth. Expectant parents can expect to be bombarded with inquiries about the baby’s gender until either an ultrasound provides the news and the parents share it or the parents inform the inquisitors that they do not want to find out until baby is born, so they will just have to wait right along with them. Once baby’s gender is known, the next round of questioning begins – have you chosen a name? Anyone who has had or … Continue reading

Ready, Set, Grill–STEAK

Subtitle: Leftover steak? What leftover steak? The Memorial Day weekend (and the unofficial kick off to the summer season) is just a few days away—-is your grill ready for some serious action? Whether you fire up the coals (or turn on the gas) and throw on hamburgers, hotdogs, chicken or steak it seems nothing tastes as delicious as char-grilled goodness. Our family has a long-standing tradition of grilling steaks on Memorial Day. Which brings me to the subtitle of this blog and the subsequent recipes. Perhaps, we’re part lion or wolf… whatever the case may be when it comes to … Continue reading

Grilling Up a Mother’s Day Feast

While the rest of the world was dining out on Mother’s Day my dad consistently chose to use the occasion to unveil a new dish in honor of my mom. Since we lived in Hawaii the recipe typically involved my dad’s trusty grill and a few of his special spices. If your hubby is the family cook and grabs for the tongs instead of the telephone (to call in dinner reservations) on Mother’s Day then you might consider passing on these recipes to him. The first is a traditional baby back rib recipe (my mom loves ribs) that can easily … Continue reading

A Steak By Any Other Name

Do you know your steak names? I was surprised to find out how little I knew! I suspect it’s because steak is one of those delicacies rarely enjoyed by this family of seven. The required use of steak knives at the dinner table tends to cause any thoughts of grilled steak to quickly give way to a much safer dinner. All the same, here is a quick guide to the many names of steak. Tenderloin The tenderloin is known as the most tender part of the steak. Filet Mignon and Chateaubriand are two well known ways to prepare this cut … Continue reading

Mom Sues Insurers Who Denied Son’s Autism Therapy

In many states, the cost of applied behavioral analysis, or ABA, therapy is required to be covered in a health insurance plan. In Minnesota, this is not the case. A mother in Minnesota is suing two insurance companies who refused to cover the ABA treatment that her son required. Applied behavioral analysis, or ABA, is a treatment used with children who have autism. It is an ongoing form of therapy. Several states, including California and Florida, have laws in place that require health insurance plans to cover the cost of ABA treatment. Sadly, not all states have laws that require … Continue reading

Campfire Cooking

Fall is the perfect time for some campfire cooking. Whether you like to use a fancy grill or rough it using only a stick, there are several recipes that you can try. Nothing beats the flavor of campfire cooking, and all of that outdoor air is one of the best seasonings for hunger. Even kids can cook over a campfire when you hand them a stick. Don’t limit their creations to just marshmallows, though. Try hot dogs and bannock, which is bread dough that you wrap around the stick. Just make sure to supervise children, since hot pointy sticks and … Continue reading

Landscape of Flavors

Given that its opening is coming (relatively) soon, it’s no surprise that the details keep pouring in about Disney World’s forthcoming Art of Animation resort. The latest Disney Parks blog post on the hotel focuses on its Landscape of Flavors food court. I love reading about food, so I’m excited to learn more. Of course the announcement of Landscape of Flavors is all a bit grand. It plays up the restaurant, making it seem like a unique and innovative new approach to dining. Perhaps it is for restaurants in Disney World hotels. All I know is it almost kind of … Continue reading

Buy One, Get One Free From Subway This Week

Subway is doing something a little bit different this week. This offer will especially appeal to those who are “early birds”, or those who work third shift, and get off of work in the wee hours of the morning. This week, when you buy one six inch sandwich from Subway, you get another six inch sandwich for free. This deal is only good during a few hours, each day. Sometime recently, I noticed that Subway had started making breakfast sandwiches. I have yet to try one, though. I do happen to like most breakfast foods, but I am rarely awake … Continue reading
