Last Minute Superbowl Food for Less Than $10!

It was such a busy weekend. I didn’t even have time to put anything into the crockpot or even defrost some chicken. As a result, dinner time was fast approaching and there was nothing on the table. What makes it worse is that it is Superbowl Sunday! Ack! Here are some of my favorite ways to use prepared food for last minute cooking and still save money. Rotisserie Chicken Around here, an already cooked rotisserie chicken will run you about $7.99. Ouch, right? Still, it beats take out at $25-$40 (the prices in my area to feed our family of … Continue reading

Before You Burn the Burgers

We’ve had the most incredible stretch of gorgeous weather this week: Picture perfect days with wall-to-wall sunshine and highs in the low 80s. Honestly, you can’t ask for more in early September when you live in Northern Wisconsin. In fact, you may have seen our glorious weather featured on national TV a few days ago. The Today show and NBC Sports were in town for the NFL kickoff party which featured live entertainment by Maroon 5, Kid Rock and Lady Antebellum. Oh, and there was some football match-up too pitting the reigning Super Bowl Champs, the Green Bay Packers against … Continue reading

Football Fun for Kids

It’s down to the final four in the NFL. The Jets, Colts, Vikings and Saints go head-to-head this weekend to see who will duke it out in Super Bowl XLIV. It’s great news for rabid football fans, but what about the kids of fanatical football fans? At most football viewing parties the kiddos are relegated to the basement while the adults whoop it up in front of the big screen. This year why not try something a little different and get the kids involved in the party? Believe it or not there are fun ways to include kids in game … Continue reading

Recipes for Your Thanksgiving Snack Table

Growing up my parents never allowed us to eat snacks on Thanksgiving. I suspect this tradition stemmed from my mom not wanting her 10-hour day in the kitchen to be for not, and the desire for a costly multi-course meal for a family of eight to be completely devoured by ravenous children. When I moved to the mainland for college I discovered that not all families function the way mine did. In fact, I quickly learned that snacks and Thanksgiving go hand-in-hand for some clans, especially those who enjoy watching professional football on Turkey Day. If your Thanksgiving Day includes … Continue reading

Are You Ready for Some Football… FOOD?

The National Football League officially kicked off its 89th season on Thursday night, but today is the day millions of pigskin fans having been waiting all summer for—the first full Sunday of non-stop bone-crunching, heart-stopping, hard-hitting on-the-field action. Given that I live in Wisconsin (not far from legendary Lambeau Field—home of the Green Bay Packers), which was ground zero for the whole Brett Favre saga (the famed quarterback came out of retirement to play for the Packers but ended up getting traded to the New York Jets) needless to say, today is a big day around here. (By the way, … Continue reading

Football Food

Our state is in the midst of a pro football frenzy. Wisconsin’s legendary Green Bay Packers are marching towards the Super Bowl and today the entire state (I’m not exaggerating) is celebrating by hosting playoff parties. Which means I had to dig deep in my recipe archives to find some simple dishes to pass at a viewing party we’ll be attending later this afternoon. If your favorite teams are playing either today or tomorrow (I’m talking to you folks in New England, Jacksonville, San Diego, Indianapolis, Seattle, Dallas and New Jersey/NewYork) and you are in need of quick and easy … Continue reading

Hearty Dips for Your New Year’s Eve Party

Thirty-two games, 64 teams… the road to the College Bowl Championship has begun at my parent’s house. With the University of Hawaii Warriors about to make history at the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day, my parent’s seaside home has turned into party central and their kitchen is at the center of all the action. Here in Wisconsin we’re gearing up to watch our beloved Badgers (my alma mater) take on Tennessee in the Outback Bowl on January 1st. And around the world home cooks are getting ready to ring in 2008 with their own celebrations. Whether you are hosting … Continue reading

Awesome Mexican Wedding Cookies

Just in time for Cinco de Mayo, these cookies are definitely the best Mexican wedding cookies you will ever eat. They are truly mouth-watering. They are great for a party, and the recipe makes enough to feed a crowd. If you are not planning on hosting a party or giving some away, you’ll probably want to halve the recipe. I found this recipe at foodnetwork.com when I planned a Mexican fiesta a few months ago. The cookies are not too difficult, but they take a little longer to make than regular cookies. The recipe will make about 100 small cookies. … Continue reading

Super Bowl Time

Are you ready for some football? It’s almost Super Bowl time and for most of us that means company and lots of food. It’s also another excuse to clean your house, although not quite as thoroughly as for the holidays, after all, there will be a mess when everyone goes home. I usually just focus on the rooms everyone will be in, the family room, the kitchen and the bathroom. Make sure there are plenty of coasters, napkins and toilet paper. Since there will be lots of food in the family room make sure that you are ready for the … Continue reading
