Baggie Omelets

Here is a cute idea that can help you introduce the art of cooking to your kids. The reason this method works so well, is because kids love to experiment. With baggie omelets, they get the chance to have fun, as well as make their own healthy meal. The baggie omelets idea also works as a fun way to feed and entertain friends at last minute spontaneous gatherings in your home. First, you will need to gather your supplies: Ziploc freezer bags (they must be the freezer kind in order to hold up to the cooking). Two eggs for each … Continue reading

Sometimes it is hard to keep track of all of the great recipes that are our there. Today, I thought I would make it a little easier by linking up some of the favorite Families.com recipes that we have posted over the years. It is a good selection of different kinds of food, from soup to desert, although I have to say that I am partial to the desert. Enjoy! *** The Serious Chocolate Lover’s Chocolate Cake Have you ever seen the gigantic chocolate cake that Costco sells? It is a 5 layer chocolate cake, with chocolatey whipped frosting and … Continue reading

Cheap Ham

Be prepared, because ham is going on sale all over the place this week. Take advantage of this to eat cheaply for months. Late last week we purchased two store brand hams. In addition to getting them pretty cheap, we also got an extra $5 off the purchase thanks to printing out an Internet printable coupon for any meat purchase at the store. In total, we spent $15 for two large hams that would normally cost about $30 a piece. Yesterday, we cooked one of the hams. We enjoyed ham for dinner, and had plenty of leftovers. I kept a … Continue reading

Milkshakes for Breakfast

When my daughter first asked me if she could have a milk shake for breakfast I immediately said no. After all, what good mother would feed her child ice cream for breakfast? Then I thought about it. First of all, ice cream packs a walloping amount of calcium. Secondly, if you make your own creation from low fat ice cream or frozen yogurt, plus some fruit–it’s certainly no worse than a doughnut (which we do on occasion). So I changed my thinking, and while I can’t say that milkshakes for breakfast are a regular occurrence in our house–it’s within the … Continue reading

Apricot-Walnut Cereal Bars

Making a concerted effort to eat a good breakfast is important. We all know it, and the experts tell us this all the time. But so often breakfast is the last thing on our minds in the morning. In fact, my husband refuses to eat breakfast unless it’s left over in someone else’s cereal bowl. He ‘claims’ he doesn’t have time. (We all know that it really is a matter of making time, but that’s beside the point.) If this at all sounds familiar, here’s a smart solution: breakfast on the go. These bars are super easy to make and … Continue reading

Nifty Things to Do With Crescent Rolls

I had two tubes of refrigerated crescent rolls. I had at least a cup full of cinnamon/brown sugar mix left over from the last time that I made cinnamon rolls. I had a living room full of hungry eyes staring at me. I had a brilliant idea. Why it has never occurred to me to stick stuff in crescent rolls before, I can’t tell you. But it only makes sense that stuffing them with some delicious filling, makes for a delicious snack and can make for an impressive spread. They bake perfectly every time and so they make a no … Continue reading

Coffee Cake Cobbler

Meet my new favorite breakfast cake: the coffee cake cobbler. This is a great dish to bring to a pot luck. You are sure to get rave reviews. But what I especially like about this recipe is that you can use any flavors you want making the cake your own unique creation! While it’s not difficult to make, there are several steps and so you want to start early (or even the night before). You will need: 1 cup of butter, softened 1 cup sugar 2 eggs 3 teaspoons of vanilla 3 cups of flour 1 teaspoon of baking soda … Continue reading

French Toast Souffle with Maple Cream Topping

This is one of those dishes that you can bring to a fancy brunch and everyone will ooh and aah over your cooking prowess. It is important to use heavy wheat or multi grain bread. Otherwise, the texture will get all messy since it is essentially being drowned in a milky eggy bath. I also have to say this is not a recipe to take short cuts on. Whipping egg whites is one way to cause dishes to rise and become ‘lighter’. For example, when you want extra light waffles, you whip the egg whites almost to meringue like status, … Continue reading
