Bake to End Childhood Hungerby Valorie Delp | More from this Blogger 09 Mar 2008 04:08 AM Calling all bakers! The Great American Bake Sale has officially begun and this is your opportunity to bake your way towards ending childhood hunger. The Great American Bake Sale is sponsored by Share Out Strength, the same people who also sponsor the Great American Dine Out. Their goal is to work with local community efforts in providing food for at-risk children in their communities. They form partnerships with local organizations, as well as state agencies and others to provide money and food for hungry children with the goal that no child should ever know what it's like to be hungry. Food Insecurity Food 'security' refers to having access to enough food for an active healthy life. According to their website on childhood hunger, 12.4 million American children don't have enough food to eat. Households with children are more than twice as likely to struggle with not having enough food. Single mothers are hardest hit as one in three homes with children being raised by a single mother struggle with finding enough food. How You Can Get Involved Go to their website and register to host a bake sale. The official event runs from March 1 to June 30 and so you can host your bake sale any time between those dates. They will send you promotional materials and incentives for participating. Personally, I am a big advocate of getting kids into the kitchen and I'm a big advocate of teaching children to give. This is a great way to combine both. Last summer we ran a lemonade stand and the funds that we raised bought a goat for a family in a rural village in Africa. This year, my children are planning on running the lemonade stand again and this will be one of the charities that we are supporting.
