Fall in New York

Now that you know what to do in New York during the spring and summer months it’s time to reveal some of the Big Apple’s most popular fall events. September typically marks the return of locals who have spent the summer at their beach homes and the mass exodus of visitors in town during their children’s school vacations. Fall in New York also means Broadway shows go into previews, the Metropolitan Opera begins its new season and Fashion Week sashays its way to Bryant Park. Other note worthy events in September include the New York Film Festival, which takes place … Continue reading

Look What’s New for New York’s New Year’s Eve Ball Drop

More than one million New Year’s Eve revelers are expected to pack the streets around Times Square to witness the annual ball drop—-nothing new about that. Meanwhile, more than 1 billion more people will be joining the festivities via the Internet or watching the event from the comfort of their own living rooms-—nothing new about that either. When the ball descends down its pole and the numbers 2-0-0-8 light up, the crowd will go crazy, confetti will fall from the heavens and everybody will sing Auld Lang Syne followed by New York, New York–there’s nothing new about that either. What … Continue reading

Calling All CHOCOHOLICS!!

I admit I am not the world’s greatest cook, but I love food and I love to eat… and what I love to eat more than any other food on the face of the planet is CHOCOLATE. (I know I am not alone.) As a guest blogger in the FOOD category (thanks Libby) my contribution will not be in the form of detailed recipes, rather I come bearing wonderful news about an extraordinary new addition to the culinary world, excuse me, the CHOCOLATE world, a place where you can indulge in slices of triple chocolate pizza, experience a shot of … Continue reading

Godiva Has a Chocolate Covered Sale

Godiva chocolates are a delicacy. If you love chocolate, then you probably have a brand that is your personal favorite. Godiva chocolates are special, in part because you cannot pick up Godiva chocolate just anywhere. This is the kind of chocolate that people give as gifts for Christmas. If you didn’t get your fill of Godiva’s Christmas chocolate last year, then you are in luck. They are having a “Chocolate Covered Sale” where some items are 40% off. I am definitely a chocoholic. If I could get all my nutrition just from chocolate, and chocolate covered items, I would be … Continue reading

Holiday Love in NYC

So much to see, so little time to take it all in. If you are traveling to the Big Apple this month, you will be delighted (and probably a bit overwhelmed) by all the holiday happenings. In addition to the traditional haunts—-Rockefeller Plaza, Macy’s and FAO Schwartz-—there is a slew of other seasonal stops you should consider making. Start at Barneys New York, at 666 Madison Avenue near 61st. You don’t have to bring your wallet to have fun here. Just peer into the store’s windows. This year the upscale retailer is celebrating with characters from a different genre: Its … Continue reading

Spending the Holidays in New York City

I love spending the holidays in New York City. The problem is, so do millions of other people. If you don’t mind dealing with huge crowds, then soaking up the sights and sounds of the season in one of the world’s most magical cities, should be on your to-do list this month. At the top of your must-see list should be Rockefeller Center. Its world-famous tree and ice skating rink serve as amazing backdrops to family photos. In addition, Radio City Music Hall, the view from Top of the Rock, and the observation deck at 30 Rockefeller Plaza are equally … Continue reading

You Can Never Have Too Much Chocolate

At least in my book. Which is why most of my playgroup potluck contributions feature the tantalizing treat. Even if you are not a huge chocolate fan, you will have a hard time saying no to the following fudgy offerings: CHOCOLATE BREAD PUDDING Ingredients: 3/4 loaf white bread 2 cups milk 1/2 cup chocolate syrup or melted sweet chocolate 1 tablespoon melted butter 5 eggs Dash of vanilla extract Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cut and cube bread and place in a large bowl. Mix together eggs, sugar, chocolate and butter and add to the bowl of cubed bread, … Continue reading

New York Lights the Way for the Summer Olympics

New York is sizzling hot… with Olympic fever. Despite the fact that the Summer Games are taking place a half a world away (and technically the Opening Ceremonies are already over), beginning tonight New York’s Empire State Building will pay tribute to the Olympics by illuminating the four sides of the famed tower with the colors of countries’ flags. For the next 16 nights, the world’s most famous building (well, one of them anyway) will honor the top 66 countries (based on the number of athletes on each national team) using colored plastic gels over 182 floodlights. Tonight, the north … Continue reading

Family Travel: Tour a Massive Handbag and Sleep in a Sandcastle

It’s a bird, it’s a plane… no, it’s a massive designer handbag and it’s headed straight for New York’s Central Park. Park managers say if you stroll through the popular Big Apple green space you’ll be able to recognize it immediately. It’ll look like a cross between a spaceship and a quilted purse, which makes sense since Chanel (the makers of the famous quilted handbag) commissioned the structure. The 7,500-square-foot building, which is made out of gleaming white plastic panels, will land in New York’s Central Park on October 20 and remain there until November 9. The structure will house … Continue reading
