Hiking and Camping with the Pups

Love the great outdoors? Your dog just might love it, too! If you’re planning a hike or camping trip with your four-legged best friend, here’s a list of supplies to get you started. For your pup: Collar and ID tags — these are essential on ANY trip. If your dog becomes separated from you, how will you find him again? Make sure your cell phone number (if you have one) is on your dog’s collar. A leash. Just because you’re in the wilderness doesn’t mean you want to let your dog run wild all the time! Current vaccination records. They’re … Continue reading

Fine Dining for Camping: Hot Dog Kabobs

There’s something about roasting stuff on a stick over a fire that’s just plain fun. There’s a certain kid appeal and although I have to admit that my children don’t always like the burnt stuff, they at least like the roasting. There were a couple different versions of hotdog kabobs that we tried while on our recent camping trip but these were our favorites! Hotdog and String Cheese Kabobs Buy cans of biscuit dough, string cheese, and jumbo sized beef hotdogs. Cut the hotdogs and string cheese up so that you can put them on a stick. However, before you … Continue reading

Fine Dining for Camping: Not Your Mother’s S’mores

I’m sure some of you have noticed a week long absence in the food blog. Our family went camping last week–and we have survived it well enough to come back and tell you what we ate! Okay truthfully, we chose a camping spot that was close enough to my in-laws that if we had issues we could flee to refuge! The first night it poured buckets and buckets of rain and so we spent the night inside the centrally air conditioned home of my lovely in-laws. However, we did make it out the subsequent night and went to town on … Continue reading

Camping Supply Fun

Part of the fun of a trip for me is preparing for it. It’s amazing what camping supplies are available now. Ovens that fit onto camp stoves, incredible meals in dehydrated form, and sophisticated water purifiers. We didn’t buy all that, but here are two fun new things we did get: I love the look of those classic tin cups for camping. But the cups are too hot to hold when they have anything hot in them, which makes drinking coffee a challenge. Plus, after a few camping trips they tend to rust. Today we got a silicone bowl and … Continue reading

Packing for Camping

We are busy packing for a camping trip. We haven’t gone camping as a family in a long time. Our nine year old twins are very excited. They are running around, laughing, jumping, yelling, and asking a zillion questions. I’m trying hard to keep patient. I’m also trying to remember that packing for a trip is fun for them, not a chore to be gotten through like it is for us. Tonight we went to the store to buy camping food, supplies for s’mores, hot chocolate, cider, things for dinner and breakfast, and of course some cookies. It wouldn’t be … Continue reading

Super Cool Birthday Party Ideas for Your 5 Year Old, Part 2

Dress-Up or Makeover Party: Would a pink festival of femininity capture your little fashionista’s heart? Girls can put on their best dress up clothes and head over to hair and make up for a complete transformation. Your hair and make up area can include painting nails, applying lip gloss and simple hair styles. Makeovers do not have to be extravagant. I find keeping it simple is best. You can suggest the girls arrive in their dress up clothes or provide an array of clothing for them. Roll out red bulletin board paper or a red bed sheet if you want … Continue reading

Summer Lovin’ at the Beach

I grew up just steps away from a black sand beach on the Big Island of Hawaii. Needless to say, there are very few Memorial Day holidays that I have not spent soaking up the sun on a stretch of sand somewhere in the world. Old habits die hard. Whereas I hold the beaches of Hawaii near to my heart, I have spent many summers sprawled out on other sandy spots that you too might consider exploring in the coming months: The Hamptons: If you can’t escape the East Coast this summer, then at least get your tan on somewhere … Continue reading
