Changes Coming to McDonald's Dollar Menu--So Long Cheap Eats

Who among us has not ordered off McDonald's dollar menu at some point in our lives?

Whether you are a hurried mom, a cash-strapped teen or a starving dad, you've likely taken advantage of the one-dollar options the fast-food giant has to offer.

Double cheeseburger-loving moms, dads, kids... I have bad news for you: it appears McDonald's is not as "recession-resistant" as it once claimed to be. According to news reports, the fast-food leader is prepping to make a super-sized announcement regarding its popular dollar menu.

Despite rising sales in October, and the fact that studies show fast-food consumption goes up when the economy is down, McDonald's is reportedly planning to raise the price of its Double Cheeseburger, which has two beef patties and two slices of cheese, and replace it with a new double hamburger with one slice of cheese.

The new burger will reportedly be dubbed the McDouble and be placed on the dollar menu. Meanwhile, the Double Cheeseburger is said to be moving to the other-side of the menu board with the chicken snack wraps and sell for $1.29.

Industry analysts say consumers can look forward to other changes on McDonald's dollar menu as well, though they are reluctant to cite specific details. One insider says the McChicken might be in jeopardy, while others say the Fruit 'n Yogurt Parfait may be getting the ax from the dollar menu.

Given the state of our economy I suppose none of us should be shocked that McDonald's is tinkering with its affordable food options. Still, I find it interesting that despite the fact that studies clearly show that junk food consumption goes up when times are tough (this was proven by the 8 percent sales increase McDonald's reported last month), the fast-food behemoth still plans to raise the price of some of its dollar menu items. Talk about a contradiction.

So, what does that mean for budget conscious families who rely on cheap eats to sustain us? I suppose we'll have to dig deeper between the couch cushions for extra change if we want to tame our craving for a double cheeseburger.

Do you know when the McChicken or the Fruit 'n Yogurt Parfait may be getting the ax from the Dollar Menu? Who did you hear it from? It's crazy that even when McDonalds are making net profits they're still tweaking the Dollar Menu.

McDonald's didn't give an exact date on the McChicken or FYP, but the doublecheeseburger gets the ax next week. It will now be $1.19-1.29 depending on where you live per MSNBC. I agree that the move is crazy given that their are one of the only mega-businesses still generating decent profits. Thanks for the comment.
