Cooking Is An Art-Are You An Artist?

by Catherine Ipcizade | More from this Blogger

Have you ever seen a recipe on television or in a magazine and thought to yourself, "That sure looks good, but there's NO way I can make that!" If you're like many people, you have. And that fear has likely held you back from making more than a few delicious meals.

The old wise men of cooking say, "Cooking is an art, while baking is a science." If you're a cook, or if you at least dream putting a decent meal on the table a few nights a week, then this is good news, my friend. Why? Because art is all about the eye, the senses, and in this case, the palate.

If you've spent years doubting your culinary capabilities, let me help you out by telling you right now that you CAN cook a good meal. All you need is the desire to try and fail and try again. You need the gusto to get into the kitchen, the willingness to get your hands dirty, and the strength to not give up.

Many a new cook heads into the kitchen full of wide-eyed determination. Perhaps this is you. Perhaps you, too, stocked your cabinet full of spices that you've never heard of. Perhaps you've even come home with a whole chicken-uncooked-and stared at it helplessly before throwing it in the trash and calling out for pizza.

No more, my friend! Today is a new day. My advice? Buy a cookbook. Not a fancy shmancy cookbook-a basic cookbook such as the one made by Better Homes and Gardens. These cookbooks offer recipes as well as basic tips for preparation. Then get into the kitchen and start experimenting. A dash of this and a dash of that may not work the first time, but I can assure you that in time you'll find flavor combinations that will make you jump for joy and shout hooray!

Learning to cook does not happen over night. But it does happen-with persistence-with time-and yes, with patience.

So get in there-get cooking! Who knows, perhaps you're the next Julia Child and you just didn't know it!
