Simple Thanksgiving Pies

Thanksgiving is just two weeks away, and while this year might not be your turn to cook the bird, there’s a good chance that you will be responsible for contributing at least one dish to the Turkey Day feast. If that’s the case, consider one (or all) of the following dessert recipes. They are easy as pie to make, but so incredibly delicious that your family and friends will never know that you didn’t slave away in the kitchen preparing them. PUMPKIN SUPREME PIE Ingredients for the Crust: 1/2 cup butter, melted 2 cups graham crackers (crushed) 1/4 cup sugar … Continue reading

Autumn Desserts: Pairing Apples with Pears

This next recipe is an incredibly delicious way to serve apples and pears in a dessert that completely captures the essence of autumn. Apple Pear Pie is easy to prepare; it basically follows a traditional apple pie recipe save for the addition of fresh pears. If you are looking for a clever way to get your kids to eat their daily serving of fruits you must try this pie. APPLE PEAR PIE Ingredients: 4 apples peeled, cored and sliced 4 pears peeled, cored and sliced 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon ground … Continue reading

The Best Pear Crisp in the World

I’m not generally one to cook with pears. They never last long enough in our fridge to accumulate enough to make a really great pie or cobbler or crisp. But we had such luck last night and so a-baking I went. This filling is really inspired by a recipe I found in Family Fun Magazine. (Yes, you’ll notice I get quite a few recipes from there.) I like it because the ground ginger gives the dish a little kick. This is definitely a case where less is more, and when I experimented with adding other spices, I have to admit … Continue reading

Delicious Apple-Pear Pie

The only thing better than the smell and taste of a freshly baked apple pie is an apple pie with pears in it! The pears add juice and texture to the pie. While nothing can replace the prominence of chocolatey things as a dessert staple in my house, this pie has definitely become a family favorite. It is definitely worth the extra effort. Use your favorite recipe for pie crust for a 9-inch pie. If you don’t have one, I suggest my favorite pie crust recipe. For the filling you will need: 1/2 lemon 3 pounds baking apples, such as … Continue reading

Angel Food Pie

Angel food cake is a popular cake in my home. I add strawberries and cool whip to it to make it complete. My kids also top it with different berries and now, the different flavors of cool whip. I have cut it up into squares and but it in a dish. Then added fresh berries to it. Then on the side, I would have chocolate syrup and caramel sauce so that everyone can help themselves to their own taste. My kids like it in their lunches too. One of my kin folk shared a recipe from her in laws. I … Continue reading

Thanksgiving at Our House Part 2 – Our Family Table

Yesterday, I wrote about one specific item that will be appearing on our Thanksgiving table and the story behind it. We all know that one turkey does not a complete Thanksgiving dinner make. There will be many other things on our table this Thursday, and thanks to my wonderful family not all of them are coming from my own kitchen. Part of the family dynamic that has been emerging since my husband and I joined forces to start our own little family (and even before that) is a spirit of helping each other out. Whether it is my parents, his … Continue reading

A Scentsible Home

What makes your home smell like home? We’ve all walked into the house one day, taken a deep breath, and known that we were home. Similarly, we’ve all likely walked into the house, taken a deep breath, and wanted to walk right out again. Yuck! Whether it’s the smell of an overcooked meal that still lingers or the smell of all of those delightful furry critters we share our homes with (I may or may not mean the kids), sometimes the house smells a little under the weather. What can you do to make your home smell like home again? … Continue reading

Healthy Recipes for 2009

Many of us started the New Year resolving to get into shape by eating healthier and exercising. How’s that going for you? With the recent stretch of bitterly cold winter weather, I felt more like digging into a warm bowl of macaroni and cheese than a plate of cold celery and carrots. But, now that the Artic blast is moving out it’s time to get back on track. The following healthy recipes are some of my favorites. They do not compromise on flavor. Rather, they are loaded with low calorie ingredients and won’t leave you hungry an hour after you … Continue reading

Thanksgiving Recipes: Vegetables

As much as your children would rather you forget them all together, vegetables are a vital part of a traditional Thanksgiving spread. While my brother’s tot will happily munch on carrots sticks (drowned in Ranch dressing) as though he were part rabbit, my preschooler needs to be bribed to take even a nibble of the crunchy orange vegetable. This is why our family meals such as Thanksgiving must include a variety of veggie dishes. The first one I’m sharing with you is the only carrot recipe my daughter will eat. Once you scan the ingredients you’ll see why. The second … Continue reading
