Unhealthiest Cookbooks for 2011

I love watching The Food Network. And by love, I mean I can name off a list of chefs like it is nobody’s business. Sometimes I see the stuff they cook on there and want to make it myself (provided it isn’t too complicated). But, the recipes are not always healthy, which some U.S. nutritionists pointed out on the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. Which chefs in particular did they call out? One was Chef Jamie Oliver for his meatball sandwich. The sandwich, which contains minced beef, mustard, an egg, ciabatta, smoke pancetta, Jarlsberg cheese, red cabbage, red onion, mint, … Continue reading

How to Store Cookbooks

As I was writing about favorite cookbooks for the food blog it made me wonder about where people store their cookbooks. Some people I know have a display shelf in the kitchen with their cookbooks on it. Usually these are the big glossy cookbooks with lots of color photographs. The disadvantage is they can tend to look untidy this way if you’re not careful. The thought of putting my cook books on display horrifies me. Mine are tucked into two cupboards above the stove. Years ago it used to be one. But you know what it’s like you get a … Continue reading

Favorite Cookbooks

Cookbooks are as individual as you are. When I look through my cupboard there are a pile of cook books. My daughter and daughter-law’s kitchens are much the same. Both, my daughter and daughter-in-law, like glossy cookbooks with color photographs of the finished product. I’m not a visual person. Hey I’m the person who always manages to misread signs relying on visuals. ‘Why can’t they just use words’ I cry. So I ’m happy to have a cookbook with no photos at all, just good recipes. Some people manage to keep their cookbooks spotless. Not me. You can always tell … Continue reading

Saving Money With Cookbooks

Cookbooks are a handy accessory in the kitchen, and they can make meal planning a much more pleasant experience. In addition, nobody in the family will get tired of eating the same old thing day after day. But how can cookbooks really save you money in the long run? Here are a few ideas. First of all, limit the number of cookbooks you purchase. It is ridiculous to own 10 different cookbooks if there is only one or two recipes in each cookbook that you actually use. Unless the cookbooks were hand me downs, there isn’t a cookbook worth its … Continue reading

Scrapbooking Your Favorite Recipe

Cookbooks fascinate me. Mostly the type that have beautiful full color photographs offsetting a delicious, mouth-watering recipe. I’ve discussed creating a cookbook with your scrapbooking supplies before. Did you listen? A couple of months back my mother’s art class decided to put together a cookbook using their beautiful painting techniques. My mother didn’t want to take the time to paint her page, and I have absolutely no painting skills. She asked me if I would scrapbook the recipe she wanted to do and hand over a page. She wanted two pages. One real clean and simple that she could add … Continue reading

The Sneaky Mama’s Favorite Chef: Annabel Karmel

When it comes to creating tasty food that’s appealing to little ones, Annabel Karmel has cornered the market as far as I’m concerned. My first “introduction” to Annabel Karmel was when I started making foods for the twins. I just couldn’t stomach the idea of several dollars worth of jarred food flying off the shelves every day. So I got out my handy Braun hand blender and I started to whip up peas, carrots, and baby cereal. Then I got stuck. I was lacking in creativity for preparing my babies’ foods and they weren’t quite ready for roast beef and … Continue reading

Keeping Favorite Recipes in One Book

Do you have some favorite recipes that you cook maybe several times a month? If you do, are your favorite recipes all together or must you look each of them up in separate cook books every time you want to make one of them? Well I certainly have favorite recipes that I cook over and over, and after having to look up these recipes in each of the cookbooks that they come from each time that I need to prepare a shopping list, I decided to find an alternative to storing my recipes. I got a journal-type notebook (about 4″ … Continue reading

12 Free Cookbooks by Mail!

As winter sets in and is filled with days indoors, I love to make my home warm and inviting with the yummy smells of cooking. Cooking at home is a very frugal thing to do, especially when it is done with ingredients you already have on hand. For example, I had a very large stockpile of condensed milk that I needed to rotate. I was tired of of the same old recipes and was racking my brain for something new. Thanks to one of these cookbooks, though, I made up some pound cake that was just right. I would have … Continue reading
