One-Pot Cooking- A New Cook Book

If you’ve been reading my blogs and recipes you know I’m a no fuss cook, so when I saw a book titled One-pot Cooking how could I possibly resist? Along with the book came a copy of the March issue of Super Food Ideas magazine, which has been around for over 10 years and has a wide readership. I admit I didn’t even know it existed. But the Mexican Chicken Bake on the cover is enough to make me think it will be good too. As a bonus to Super Foods Ideas One-pot Cooking which tells me it has ‘ … Continue reading

Desserts with Cherries and Chocolate

Friday is our playgroup’s big Halloween party. Whereas I already shared the recipe I plan to take, I thought it might be helpful to post a couple more kid (and adult)-friendly recipes that can be made in advance and travel well, in case you are still searching for a dish to pass at your Halloween party. The first recipe for Heavenly Freezer Brownies is ideal for chocoholics. Don’t let the name fool you; the brownies require an oven to bake before hitting the freezer. It’s a unique cooking concept that (in my opinion) enhances the texture of the brownies without … Continue reading

Frozen Treats Galore: A Berry Yummy Dessert

There’s something about summer that simply demands you eat a fair share of berries. It’s more than the fact that they’re in season and consequently cheaper–it’s that they’re simply beckoning with their juiciness. (Really–can’t you hear the strawberries beckoning now?) Okay, so maybe I’m a little obsessed. But obsession lead to the delicious re-creation of this creamy strawberry frozen dessert. If you think blueberry sauce is odd with the frozen strawberries and cream, you can go ahead and substitute more strawberries for the sauce. However, dare I say, you don’t dismiss it until you try it! You will need: 2 … Continue reading

Common Cooking Dilemmas: 5 Tricks for Portions and Timing

Someone recently asked the following question: I like to cook but I can never seem to get the portions and timing of the food right. I always make way too much or way too little. And if I’m making several dishes, I can’t seem to get it all done at the same time. Do you have any suggestions? These are actually very common cooking dilemmas and I think it’s one of those things that all cooks learn over time. It doesn’t come automatically. I can almost guarantee you that your own mother messed up meals by serving cold meat when … Continue reading

Freezer Cooking: Must Have Items

While supplies needed for different styles of freezer cooking sessions, varies somewhat, there are some that are more convenient to have on hand than others. This does not mean that you are supposed to run out to the store, and purchase all these items if you do not have them already. You can do just that, but I would recommend seeing first, how often you actually use each individual item and if they really warrant a purchase. In the meantime, try to borrow from friends, family and neighbors. If you ask them, usually they are quite willing to lend it … Continue reading

Food Prep Businesses: A Growing Trend in Freezer Cooking

Have you ever tried once a month cooking or freezer cooking? If not and you’re looking to save time and money, you need to check out the frugal blog, or the freezer cooking recipes here. With few exceptions, most recipes will freeze well. However, there is a growing trend catering (pun totally intended) to the uber busy supermom who wants to have a gourmet home cooked meal every night. . .or at least nearly every night. Known as meal prep businesses, they are cropping up all over the United States. Here’s how it works. You make an appointment with said … Continue reading

Freezer Cooking – Choosing The Right Freezer

One of the hardest things people face, when dealing with freezer cooking, is lack of space, or not enough freezer room. Although freezer cooking can be done using only a regular side by side refrigerator and freezer, it is best done when you own a separate freezer chest. The reason a bigger freezer chest is necessary, is it allows for more storage, and easier organization. So how do you know which freezer is right for you? It really is not a difficult choice, but I first recommend that you evaluate a few things first. Before even considering the purchase of … Continue reading

A Freezer Cooking Weekend

Freezer cooking is an easy method to stay frugal and help you save money on food costs. Preparing foods in advance can save time as well. It does require a little extra time once a month, but is totally worth it throughout the month when you are short on time and can throw a meal right into the oven. This weekend is my frugal cooking weekend. It will start today, and end sometime tomorrow afternoon. Sometimes I do have to do a little on Sunday’s but I am hoping to avoid that this time. That does not mean that I … Continue reading

Cooking With Kids – Root Beer Floats

I love simple recipes for teaching children how to measure, mix, and cook. Here’s a fun dessert that even very young children can make with little or no help. There’s no stove or even measuring involved. And it only takes a few minutes to make. Root beer floats! All you need is a tall glass, vanilla ice cream, and some root beer soda. Put a couple of scoops of ice cream in the glass. Slowly add the root beer, or the glass will fill up with foam instead of soda. Add a straw if you want, and enjoy. That’s all … Continue reading
