Making Holiday Fudge and Other Chocolate Christmas Treats

You can’t go an entire holiday season without indulging in a little (or a lot) of fudge, right? (I’ll let my hips answer that one.) Actually, for years I lived a fudge-free life (save for the occasional slip up at a holiday party). But, then I found the simplest fudge recipe known to man. It makes creating fabulous fudge so easy it’s dangerous for people like me who have little will power when it comes to sweet treats. Add in my Super Simple Brownie recipe and the holidays are just a 10-pound accident waiting to happen. HOLIDAY FUDGE Ingredients: 12 … Continue reading

German Chocolate Brownies

I have a confession to make. These brownies really are not German chocolate brownies but they’re named this way no doubt because of the coconut and pecans that are similar to the frosting that adorns a German chocolate cake. And did you know that a German chocolate cake is actually more appropriately called German’s chocolate cake? The original German’s chocolate cake was a buttermilk chocolate cake sent in by a housewife that used German’s chocolate invented by an English man named Sam German. (Not very German at all is it?) German’s chocolate is sweeter than milk chocolate and comes in … Continue reading

The Seventh and Eighth Weeks Post Partum

Seven weeks out from my daughter’s birth, I seemed to have hit a bit of a rut. While I am still feeling great, my sweets intake has increased due to recent celebrations and my motivation to exercise seems to be dwindling a little bit too. My diet started veered off course when I put together a party for my daughter’s baptism. I made the famous red velvet cupcakes. They were both tasty and calorie heavy especially with the cream cheese frosting. After that I made my thanksgiving pumpkin pie and pumpkin bread, using the sweet pumpkins I had processed and … Continue reading

A Sweet Christmas Morning Treat

German pancakes, also known as, Dutch baby pancakes are a popular sweet treat served on Christmas morning–at least in homes where muffins and crepes don’t reign supreme. What makes the dish special is that unlike traditional pancakes, German pancakes are placed in the oven so they puff up (though they rapidly deflate once they’re removed from the oven), and then they are doused with powdered sugar and sweet fruit toppings. If you are looking to sugar coat your Christmas breakfast this year, consider making the following recipe for Traditional German Pancakes: TRADITIONAL GERMAN PANCAKES Ingredients: 3 eggs, room temperature 1/2 … Continue reading

Back-to-School Baked Goods: Cookies and Cupcakes

My mom always made a big deal about the first day back to school… in a good way. She would make an extra special breakfast for all of us in the morning and she always had homemade treats ready for us when we returned in the afternoon. My brothers and I would chow down on cookies, cupcakes, or tarts while she listened to the events that transpired during our first day back to class. It was a simple gesture, but one I still remember to this day… probably because the tradition lasted all the way through high school. If you … Continue reading

Bake to End Childhood Hunger

Calling all bakers! The Great American Bake Sale has officially begun and this is your opportunity to bake your way towards ending childhood hunger. The Great American Bake Sale is sponsored by Share Out Strength, the same people who also sponsor the Great American Dine Out. Their goal is to work with local community efforts in providing food for at-risk children in their communities. They form partnerships with local organizations, as well as state agencies and others to provide money and food for hungry children with the goal that no child should ever know what it’s like to be hungry. … Continue reading

Super Easy Desserts for Entertaining: Caramel Pie and Slow Cooker Peanut Butter Fudge Cake

‘Tis the season for decadent desserts that impress. . .but who has the time? This is a super easy pie that comes together rather quickly but yields impressive ‘guest worthy’ results. It reminds me of the topping on a German Chocolate Cake with coconut and pecans. Since all of the ingredients are poured into the pie as is, it comes together in a snap, but you do have to allow time for freezing. This pie makes a good pie to do ahead of time as it freezes well. Caramel Pie You will need: 4 ounces cream cheese, softened 1/2 cup … Continue reading

What To Do With Half a Can of Pumpkin

Either the people at Libby’s pumpkin are not so truly bright or they’re very genius. I haven’t decided which yet. Maybe you can help me decide. Yesterday, I made several sweet potato and pumpkin pies and other various desserts. Our church has an annual Thanksgiving dessert where we all get together and eat pie, and for the last several years, I’ve made something. I generally don’t do pumpkin because as we’ve noted, I don’t like pumpkin pie. But this year, that’s what was requested, so that’s what I did. I didn’t make plain pumpkin pie but rather things like Spiced … Continue reading

Shopping List and Tidbits for August 21 to the 24

This is the food blog’s week in review. Rather than simply linking and describing the recipes or other interesting tidbits that we have here, this is a shopping list for the week’s recipes. It is divided into staples–things that are called for but that you likely keep on hand, recipe ingredients–things that you need to buy, and tidbits–those interesting items that belong in food but don’t qualify as recipes! Also a big thanks to Mary Ann who is giving us excellent tips on choosing all of our produce! Staples: baking powder brown sugar butter eggs flour milk powdered sugar salt … Continue reading
