Chef Gordon Ramsay

If you have ever seen the reality show “Hell’s Kitchen,” you may be wondering “Just who is this Gordon Ramsay guy and what gives him the right to yell at these young chefs?” Well, let’s take a look at how Gordon Ramsay got where he is. After a potential soccer career was derailed by injuries, Ramsay turned to another interest – cooking. He studied Hotel Management at a local college then worked as a commis chef at the Wroxton House Hotel in the late ‘80s. He moved to London, then after working at Harveys for almost three years, decided to … Continue reading

Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto

If you ever watched Iron Chef or Iron Chef America on the Food Network, you may know of Masaharu Morimoto. Chef Morimoto was Iron Chef Japanese on the original Iron Chef show. However, he was the third Iron Chef Japanese – only Kenichi, Iron Chef Chinese, remained an original Iron Chef throughout the series. Morimoto was the only Iron Chef to make the crossover to Iron Chef America, the Americanized version of the show. He was my favorite of all the Iron Chefs (although Kenichi comes in a close second), so I am happy he is with the new show. … Continue reading

Make the Most of Theme Cruises

Theme cruises are more popular now than ever before.  What started off as a way for like-minded travelers to bond at sea has turned into a multi-million dollar niche; however, cruise companies aren’t the only ones benefitting from these unique voyages.  Passengers also gain in more ways than one when booking a theme cruise.  Not only do guests enjoy all the services and amenities associated with a regular cruise, they also get the added bonus of partaking in a specific passion, be it music, cooking, writing or scrapbooking. Helping stretch passengers dollars at sea is Holland America.  The cruise company … Continue reading

Analyze This

You know that dream where everyone in the world hates you, but somehow you gain an invitation to compete on Iron Chef America where the secret ingredient is barley and one of the guest judges is Anderson “I love me some Crack Pie” Cooper, and you burn fish so badly that it looks like chicken until you pull back the skin and a sea of pin bones are revealed, and suddenly the entire kitchen goes up in flames… What do you mean you don’t remember that one? I get that one all the time, which probably explains why my 8-year-old … Continue reading

Meatless Monday Campaign Continues

Not too long ago, I blogged about Meatless Monday. That is the campaign to avoid meat on Mondays. This campaign has two benefits – it is green and it is healthy. Sid Lerner, who gave us the “Squeeze the Charmin” campaign, is now trying to get chefs on board for his Meatless Mondays. He hopes to turn something that may seem routine into something special. Who’s trying to help Lerner spread the word? One of my favorite celebrity chefs, Wolfgang Puck, has used the concept in some of his restaurants. He started Meatless Monday at his Las Vegas eatery, Wolfgang … Continue reading

What is a Homemaker Worth?

Do you ever feel taken for granted and undervalued as a homemaker? For many of us homemaker is our second full time job, after we do whatever it is we do all day to pay the bill, we come home and work a whole lot more. When I was younger my grandmother used to say, “A man works from sun to sun but a woman’s work is never done.” In my marriage that was true, my ex husband did very little around the house, and it’s even more true now that I’m divorced. It’s hard to place a value on … Continue reading

Free Apps for Parents of Kids Who Have Allergies

Life can be difficult for parents of kids who have allergies. You never can know, for certain, when your child will accidentally encounter an allergen. Sometimes, being well informed can help keep your child a little bit safer. There are plenty of free apps that are useful for parents of kids with allergies. Not every allergy related app that you find at the iTunes store, or at Amazon.com, is going to be available for free. Some, like the Allergy Caddy cost a little bit of money to download. However, since I am writing this blog in December, I realize that … Continue reading

Childless Food Network Star Burns Sick Kid

You know, I really enjoy watching Ina Garten whip up healthy and inspired dishes on her Food Network show “Barefoot Contessa.” Sure, she is a multi-millionaire celebrity chef, who lives in an immaculately clean mansion in the Hamptons, and tools around in a posh Mercedes, which is about as far away from my reality as humanly possible, but on TV our differences seem to melt away. Well, they did until I was asked to write a letter chastising the former White House nuclear policy analyst, turned culinary guru. Apparently, there is a huge contingency of parents out there who think … Continue reading

Disney World Can Accommodate Food Allergies

The happiest place on Earth, Disney World, is now a little bit safer for children who have food allergies. Disney recently won an award for it’s commitment to making things easier for families of children who have food allergies or an intolerance to certain foods. They have a process for guests to follow to request food that will fit around one’s allergies. As someone who has had severe allergies since I was a young child, I understand first hand how quickly an allergic person can go from feeling fine to being incredibly sick. Allergies tend to run in families. In … Continue reading

Just Another Meatless Monday

When I read this story, the Bangles “Just Another Manic Monday” ran through my mind. But, the Monday I am going to write about today isn’t manic, but meatless. That’s right – meatless. I’ve preached meatlessness (a word I apparently just made up) before as a way to be green and healthy at the same time. And now, we have an actually campaign called Meatless Mondays. Meatless Mondays was created by Sid Lerner and Lerner knows a thing or two about advertising. He had a 50 year advertising career in New York City, including the now famous “Squeeze the Charmin” … Continue reading
