Is Kentucky Fried Chicken Demoralizing Our Daughters

Is Kentucky Fried Chicken really trying to treat my daughter like a piece of meat? Well, technically, my daughter is too young to be at the center of this KFC controversy, but yours might be the company’s latest target. So, here’s the scoop on the chicken company’s crazy conundrum: Less than a year after it debuted its now infamous KFC Double Down Sandwich (the one that features two pieces of fried chicken fillets in the place of bread and squishes two slices of Monterey Jack and pepper jack cheese, two slices of bacon and a special sauce in between them) … Continue reading

Kentucky Fried Chicken Courting Celebrities– Finger Lickin’ Good Times for ALL

What is it about fast food restaurants that propel them to constantly seek out celebrity support? Oh yeah, money. I suppose when the folks at Kentucky Fried Chicken offered to throw an all-you-can-eat housewarming party for “Hills” star Lauren Conrad, who recently purchased a new home, they did the math and discovered it would be cheaper to provide food for a house full of girls who don’t eat than pay for a 30-second TV commercial. I’m not kidding. About the free food anyway. In an open letter to the blonde reality TV star the chicken chain said they wanted to … Continue reading

Fast Food Kids’ Meals—How Healthy Are They?

My small fry loves French fries more than I would like her to… but I know she isn’t the only 3-year-old out there who begs for the greasy potato strings when driven by those famous golden arches. What about you? What are your children eating for dinner tonight? If your answer contains the words: Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions (you get the idea)… then this blog is for you. I happen to be a parent who loathes having to stop at fast food restaurants for any meal. However, since we do travel quite a bit I … Continue reading

Eating Out: More Trick Than Treat

Eating out is a big treat for most families.  Parents love the break from cooking and doing the dishes, while kids enjoy eating chicken nuggets in a different setting.  Unfortunately, splurging on a restaurant meal may come back to bite you. According to a new study by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), parents are doing their children a disservice by treating them to dinner out.  Researchers say menu options offered to children by most U.S. restaurant chains have way too many calories, in addition to dangerously high amounts of salt and fat.  In fact, the group … Continue reading

Rethinking the Fast Food Pit Stop

My friend doesn’t allow her young children to indulge in fast food of any kind. I am not THAT mom. While I would love to say that I feed my family 100 percent organic, made from scratch meals EVERY.SINGLE.DAY. — I don’t. The crew at our local McDonald’s can vouch for that. That said we are by no means drive-thru addicts. I allow my French fry- loving first grader to get her fix of grease and lard three times a month–max. However, after reading a new report posted in the Journal of the American Medical Association about the effects of … Continue reading

Another KFC Celebrity Hook Up

The PR people at Kentucky Fried Chicken must be working overtime. Either that or they have someone on their payroll that spends a ton of time perusing tabloids. Just a few months after offering to throw an all-you-can-eat housewarming party for “The Hills” star Lauren Conrad the folks at KFC are at it again. This time, though the finger lickin’ good company is targeting singers Rihanna and Chris Brown. The young hit makers were just offered a free meal from KFC after they were inadvertently snapped by the paparazzi kissing and hugging at one of its Florida restaurants. Since the … Continue reading

Brangelina’s Very Greasy Christmas

If Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are trying to convince fans that they are as down-home as the next family they’re doing a great job. Watching video of how the Jolie-Pitt’s spent their holiday sure made me feel closer to them. Various news channels have been milking the video of Pitt driving a white Nissan minivan through a McDonald’s drive-thru in New Orleans on Christmas Day. According to employees there, the actor turned father of four picked up Happy Meals for his entire pint-sized brood. But, team Jolie-Pitt’s fast food frenzy didn’t stop there. The day after Christmas the entire … Continue reading

Trans Fat, Fast Foods, Truth in Advertising and Responsibility

I have been avoiding this topic like the plague. However, I love food and I love to write about it. The ban on trans fat in New York City as well as other proposed legislation is hot button issue in food right now. Frankly, I long for a simpler time when food was just there for eating but such is the case no longer. You may have heard that New York City banned trans fat in all its restaurants. Eateries have until July of 2008 to get rid of the artery clogging substance. My opinion? This is a good move. … Continue reading

Health-Conscious Hotels

In previous blogs I told you about how several major hotel chains including Marriott and Westin have gone nonsmoking. In addition, I’ve discussed how some hotels have implemented more rigorous cleaning procedures to combat germs. Now it seems at least one major hotel chain is taking their guests’ health concerns to a new level. Loews Hotels has just announced that they will be following the lead of a growing number of fast-food chains and the city of New York — it will ban artificial trans fats in food it offers. They make history by becoming the first hotel chain to … Continue reading

Burger King Causing A Whopper Of A Health Problem In Spain

Here’s something you don’t hear everyday: government officials are trying to force a famous fast food giant to yank a commercial–for health reasons. Spanish authorities are asking Burger King to abandon an ad campaign for its monster XXL burger – the caloric equivalent of eating 10 fried eggs – because it violates a Spanish initiative against obesity. According to the country’s Health Ministry, the fast food chain has been warned for more than a week that its commercials for the massive burger go against an agreement signed by the Spanish Federation of Hoteliers and Restaurateurs, of which Burger King is … Continue reading
