Make Your Own "Pink's" Hot Dogs at Home

A while back, I posted a blog about Pink's Hot Dog Stand. It is been an institution on the corner of La Brea and Melrose for over 65 years. Many celebrities love Pinks - they count Bill Cosby, Jennifer Garner, Aerosmith, Henry Winkler, Snoop Doggie Dog, Chef Bobby Flay, and Jason Alexander among their fans. How's that for an eclectic bunch?

The only problem with Pink's is every time we went to Los Angeles, either it was closed or had people around the corner just waiting to get in. Now, I am on the opposite coast, so the best I can do is make my own. Fortunately, for me, Chef Bobby Flay has some of their hot dog recipes listed on the Food Network page, so now I can at least try to make them at home.

Pink's Bacon Burrito Dog

For this recipe, you will need one 12-inch tortilla, 2 all beef hot dogs, 2 slices of American cheese, chili, 3 slices of crispy bacon, and diced onions.

Steam your hot dogs until done. Place them in your flour tortilla, and then add the two slices of cheese, 1/3 cup of chili, the slices of bacon, and 2 tablespoons of diced onions. Fold the top and bottom of the tortilla, roll, and enjoy!

Pink's Guadalajara Dog

For this recipe, you will need one soft hot dog bun, mustard, one all beef hot dog, sweet relish, chopped tomatoes, diced onions, and sour cream.

Steam your hot dog until done. Spread the hot dog bun with 2 tablespoons of mustard. Place the hot dog in the bun and top with 2 tablespoons of sweet relish, 1/4 cup of chopped tomatoes, and 1 tablespoon of diced onions. Top that with sour cream - yum!

Pink's Millennium Dog

For this recipe, you will need one soft hot dog bun, one jalapeno Polish dog, chili, grilled onions, chopped tomatoes, shredded lettuce, and guacamole.

Steam your hot dog until done. Place the dog in your bun and top with 1/2 cup of chili, 1/4 cup of grilled onions, 1/4 cup of chopped tomatoes, 1/4 cup of shredded lettuce, and 1/4 cup of guacamole. You will probably want to use a knife and fork with this one!

I love Pink's and the chili cheese dogs from The Varsity in Atlanta! YUM! Great blog Libby--now I'm hungry. :)

Great hot dogs do not cover up the actual hot dog with three tons of condiments. Things like pineapples do not belong on hot dogs, and Pinks is perhaps the most over rated hot dog in America.

Great hot dogs come from two cities...New York and Chicago. New york uses a grilled natural casing hot dog, and the best come from Nathans and Papaya King. The hot dog and bun do the talking and the topping which is either relish, kraut, chili does not overwhelm the dog. Mustard is either spicy brown or mild yellow. Sabrets is the New York push cart dog and is boiled rather then grilled, and is also excellent.

In Chicago, a natural casing Vienna beef dog on a sesame seed steamed bun with tomato, cucumber, relish pickle, and celery salt rule.

Pinks is a west coast interpretation of the real hot dog that has gone a muck with nasty hot dogs covered up in a mound of absurd toppings. That is why Bobby Flay came out there and whipped them in a hot dog throw down.

A true hot dog connoisseur would not be caught dead waiting in line for that abomination dog Pinks serves up.

Maybe so Topdog, but there must be a lot of non-hot dog connoisseurs in LA because I never went by Pinks when there wasn't a line down the street :-)
