Is Traveling Making You Fat?

If your New Year’s resolution is to lose weight in 2010, then you might want to stay away from airport restaurants. A new survey shows that most travelers are forced to ditch their healthy eating habits when on the road. Or more specifically, when traveling through the nation’s airports. When hunger strikes at the airport, you are typically at the mercy of fast food restaurants. Your food choices are limited to processed “convenience” items loaded with sodium, fat and empty calories. Sure, you could pack your own healthier options, like fresh fruit and a sandwich, but what parent is going … Continue reading

Make Your Own Food, Even Cheese!

Sure we have all heard about growing your own food to save money. And of course, we have heard about preparing your own meals will save money. Home cooked meals save plenty (See this earlier article that tell you how to calculate that savings). But did you know that you can actually make some of the ingredients to your meals? I have to confess that this post was inspired by the Food Blog, one … Continue reading

Making Cheese Out of Yogurt

I am very picky about my mayonnaise. I don’t like substitutes unless they are very tasty. And to me, it is unfortunate that the thing that makes mayonnaise so tasty is that it has oodles of bad-for-you fat in it. Taking out the fat makes it less tasty. So when I first heard about making your own cheese out of yogurt and using that as an alternative to both cream cheese and mayonnaise. . .I was skeptical. It does taste different–but not bad. It has a lot fewer calories than even low-fat versions of cream cheese and mayonnaise and honestly, … Continue reading

Roll Ups, Juice Boxes and Cheese Sticks – Oh My!

Have you ever stopped to think how much money you spend on convenience foods and snacks? Frankly, I didn’t give it much thought until my daughter entered preschool. Suddenly our shopping trips turned into a nightmare. She began to beg for things like juice boxes and fruit snacks in the shapes of Barbie, Sponge Bob and Dora. I’ll admit it, I gave in. I found myself filling my grocery cart with quick and easy snacks. Frankly, I liked the idea of my daughter grabbing her own juice, yogurt, individual cereal box or cheese in the mornings. I didn’t realize how … Continue reading

Who Needs Take-out? Make Your Own!

Who doesn’t love breakfast sandwiches from a fast-food drive-thru? Last night after the football game, my family and I were contemplating what to have for dinner. We had planned on grilled salmon with white rice and broccoli. However, after snacking on artichoke dip and cheese dip with tortilla chips, our appetites just weren’t up for a complete meal. As an alternative to the normal weeknight or even weekend dinner, we opted for breakfast instead. Our solution last night was to serve egg muffins. Enjoy this easy recipe for a yummy weekday breakfast or a quick and simple evening meal. My … Continue reading

Study: Milk Consumption Associated With Bone Fractures

A study found that milk doesn’t do the body as good as you may have been led to believe. This doesn’t mean you should stop consuming milk. It means you should be aware of current findings about milk, health, and nutrition. A study called “Milk and Mortality” was published in the British Medical Journal in October of 2014. It used data from two large, long-term Swedish studies of adult men and women. The people in the study were asked about how much and what kinds of milk and dairy products they consumed. The study was led by Uppsala University professor … Continue reading

Snow Day Part II

There was not a lot of snow maybe three or four inches, but I was shocked at how terrible the roads were.  None of the roads had been cleared (at this point is is almost eight thirty in the morning).  I carefully drove, with the children safely secured in their car seats, through town.  There were a few hills to tackle and I crossed my fingers that the light at the bottom of one large hill and before another rather large hill would stay green.  Twenty miles per hour was about the safest speed at which to travel even though … Continue reading

When Your Baby Has Food Allergies

Recently, I decided to get my baby tested for food allergies. With the history that my two boys have had, I just wanted to make sure that there were no lingering issues as we moved forward with food trialing. I had been suspicious that eggs were causing a problem with my little one when I was breastfeeding. It was one of the foods I had cut out of my diet when he was having all of his tummy issues. But, none of my children have ever been diagnosed with your typical IgE food allergies. IgE stands for Immunoglobulin E which is … Continue reading
