Quick and Easy Rice Side Dishes

I am always looking for a quick and easy side dish because I get so tired of doing the same old “green beans” or “mashed potatoes” thing. Here are a few rice dishes you might want to try: Herbed Rice Pilaf For this recipe, you will need long grain rice, celery, onion, butter, chicken broth, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, dried oregano, and dried thyme. To prep for this recipe, you will need to chop enough celery to make one cup and enough onion to make 1/2 cup. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. In a skillet over medium heat, saute … Continue reading

GenealogyBank Just Added 25 Million New Records

About a month ago, I accidentally came across a genealogy website called GenealogyBank. Ever since then, I get occasional email from them that tells me about resources that have been added to their website. They recently added 25 million new records. GenealogyBank.com describes itself as “The Largest Newspaper Archive for Family History Research”. Win a $500 Gift Card from ROSS

ROSS is a department store known for it’s low prices. Most of what you can find at ROSS is clothing, for women, men, children and infants. The store close to me seems to have some sort of sale on dresses going on all the time. Right now, ROSS is having a sweepstakes, where someone will win a $500 ROSS gift card. The last few times I’ve been inside a ROSS store, it was because a friend of mine and I were downtown, and had time to look around at things. This is one of those stores where the stock tends … Continue reading

Family Fun That Won’t Break the Bank

Taking a summer vacation with your kids doesn’t have to put a major dent in your wallet. Simply take advantage of the free family-friendly events taking place across the country, and you can have fun without breaking the bank. The structure was inspired by a tree and … Continue reading

Some States Have More Premature Babies Than Others

A new report shows that the odds of you having a premature baby depend on the state in which you live. The report was issued by the March of Dimes organization which tracked premature births and gave a report card on the disparity of premature births by state. For example, the states with the lowest incidence of premature births tend to be up north. In Vermont, a woman is least likely to have a premature baby. Only 9 percent of all births are premature. Oregon and Connecticut also have low rates of premature births. When you move down further south … Continue reading

B.B. King Gains a Museum while Elvis Loses One

Legendary bluesman B.B. King has gotten his own museum in Indianola, Mississippi, his home town. You may not have heard of Indianola, it is a tiny town of just over 12,000. But they rolled out the carpet for their favorite son with a $15 million dollar B.B. King and Delta Interpretative Center. B.B. said that he hopes the museum will be used to education the young and old about the origins of the blues. The 20,000 square foot museum is a mixture of the new (with touch screen interactivity) and the old (vinyl records and yellowed, faded recording contracts from … Continue reading

Tropical Winter Getaways

BRRRRRR!!!!! I am FREEZING! And I know I am not alone. It’s snowing in Mississippi and Georgia, there is ice falling from the sky in Louisiana and here in the upper Midwest a windchill advisory has been issued because the current temperature is 5 BELOW zero and the windchill (what it actually feels like outside) has plummeted to 35 BELOW zero. To say that I wish I were at my parents home in Hawaii right now is… well… wishful thinking. And I know I am not the only one dreaming of a tropical getaway right now. The good news is … Continue reading
