Favorite Cookbooks

Cookbooks are as individual as you are. When I look through my cupboard there are a pile of cook books. My daughter and daughter-law’s kitchens are much the same. Both, my daughter and daughter-in-law, like glossy cookbooks with color photographs of the finished product. I’m not a visual person. Hey I’m the person who always manages to misread signs relying on visuals. ‘Why can’t they just use words’ I cry. So I ’m happy to have a cookbook with no photos at all, just good recipes. Some people manage to keep their cookbooks spotless. Not me. You can always tell … Continue reading

My Favorite Cooking Magazines

I wrote in my last guest blog here, about my massive recipe collection. I have been collecting recipes for over ten years and I have to say that I do try most of them. You’d think I would randomly pull out recipes at every chance I have but I’m actually quite selective. Any recipe wishing to join the ranks of my collection must only contain ingredients that I can find easily. Of course the dish has to look incredibly scrumptious and/or be very ‘kid-friendly’. And any recipe that requires a massive amount of preparation is likely out of the running, … Continue reading

Planning for Holiday Fun

The day after Thanksgiving is a great day to do a little planning for December. I don’t like to fight the crowds, today. I like to stay home with a piece a pie, a fire, a pen and a calendar. Our paper has a listing of upcoming local events. I penciled in parades, the special lights at the zoo nights, and the dates of a local production of the Christmas Carol. I wrote in dates of Christmas parties that I knew about. The kids and I figured out a good day to put up the tree and to decorate the … Continue reading

Cook Books with More Meat

When is a cookbook more than a cookbook? Come with me and let’s find out. In recent release “Cooking with the Bible,” authors Anthony Chiffolo and Rayner Hesse Jr. outline meals they feel would have been served in Biblical times, based on scriptural references and also on their own research into the region and the times. According to the Reader’s Digest, the duo spent over three years researching and experimenting to come up with dishes that would be just right, but because of the scarcity and rarity of some of the ingredients, substitutions were made to suit what is available … Continue reading
