Frugal Living Month in Review: August 2008

With August passed, it will be hard to hold on to summer, but fortunately, we have a lot of memories of the “dog days.” We also have lots of great articles about saving money, something that is pretty important these days. Take a look at what was posted in August. August 1st Frugal Living Month in Review: July 2008 July went by so quickly for us! There were so many fun and frugal activities and events for us to explore, from a science camp to free movies and sand sculpting. I hope your July was equally fun and frugal. A Unit Study Starter on the Vikings

The Vikings are a very interesting people to study in part because so much of their history is related to them pillaging and thieving from other peoples. They were particularly fond of picking on monasteries–presumably because monks were not so feisty. However, if you read extensively on the Vikings, what you discover is that they were a deeply family oriented people. They were also fairly religious although it’s notable that they stopped raiding surrounding areas when they converted to Christianity. Here are a few ideas for studying the Vikings. Geography Vikings, as you probably are aware are from the Northern … Continue reading

Ask a Food Blogger: How Do You Create a Menu Plan?

I’m excited to answer my first food blogger question: I know I would eat healthier and we’d eat more meals at home if I had a weekly menu plan. But how do you go about creating one? You are correct on both counts: menu plans will help you eat healthier, stick to certain goals, and it will decrease the likelihood that you have to get take out for lack of preparation. One thing that can help with menu preparation is recipe software. Most recipe software has grocery list features as well as menu planning features. I have written before about … Continue reading

10 Things You Didn’t Know About the New Food Blogger

I am not new to families.com but I now get the privilege of blogging for the food blog on a regular basis. If you’ve read my blogs, you probably know a few things about me already: I have twin girls who are almost 20 months old, along with the other three children. . .making a total of 5 kids (under the age of 7)! I live in the inner city. I know way too much about nursing babies and advocate it any chance I get. We are a homeschooling family with a particularly inquisitive son. I have even done a … Continue reading

Keeping Favorite Recipes in One Book

Do you have some favorite recipes that you cook maybe several times a month? If you do, are your favorite recipes all together or must you look each of them up in separate cook books every time you want to make one of them? Well I certainly have favorite recipes that I cook over and over, and after having to look up these recipes in each of the cookbooks that they come from each time that I need to prepare a shopping list, I decided to find an alternative to storing my recipes. I got a journal-type notebook (about 4″ … Continue reading

My Favorite Cooking Magazines

I wrote in my last guest blog here, about my massive recipe collection. I have been collecting recipes for over ten years and I have to say that I do try most of them. You’d think I would randomly pull out recipes at every chance I have but I’m actually quite selective. Any recipe wishing to join the ranks of my collection must only contain ingredients that I can find easily. Of course the dish has to look incredibly scrumptious and/or be very ‘kid-friendly’. And any recipe that requires a massive amount of preparation is likely out of the running, … Continue reading

My Recipe Collection Has Taken Over the Kitchen

I have a confession: I collect recipes. Some people like stamps, some people like dolls. . .me, I like recipes. I’ve been collecting recipes for over 10 years (since I’ve gotten married) and well, let’s just say they were in need of some serious organization. I also collect cookbooks but I have a rule that if I haven’t used it at least once a year. . .it goes out to the trash. Since I can’t stand to loose a cook book, I make a point to cook from each one at least once a year. But I digress. Getting Started … Continue reading
