New to Food Blog but Years in the Kitchenby Dale Harcombe | More from this Blogger 13 Oct 2009 10:51 AM I've been cooking since I was around seven or eight years old and let me tell you that's too many years ago to want to count them. I had a mother who encouraged me in the kitchen. Back then I cooked mostly cakes and sweet things but by my early teens, I regularly cooked meals for the family. So I guess by now I ought to have found out a bit about food to pass on. I will be writing 6 food blogs per month. For those who don't know me, I might be new to the food blog but I am no stranger to Families.com. I have already been writing for Marriage and Christian family. It'll be fun to write on new topics like Home, Food and Education now as well. My family is going to laugh when I tell them I'm writing about food. It's a standing joke in our house that I could not follow a recipe if my life depended on it. Take for example, the other night we were having dinner guests and I decided to try out two new recipes from one of the gluten free cook books I have. Yes, I will at times be sharing hints and recipes for gluten free cooking, including gluten free Christmas cake for those with this allergy to contend with. As I was preparing the meal I said to my husband, 'I really should try these things out beforehand, not when guests are coming.' Especially when I can't be trusted to stick to the recipe. But of course I didn't. I just hoped everything would turn out. They usually do. The two recipes were a huge hit, especially the rice dish, even if the recipes did have my own variations. I'm a great one for looking at a recipe and then substituting ingredients for others I think will work better. The recipe for Dale's middle eastern rice will appear in my next blog. I even decided to change it from a cold side dish to a hot one. And I promise to behave and give you the exact quantities for recipes I give, even though I'm one of those cooks who rarely measures anything. So looking forward to having you join me.
