Autumn Recipes: N is for Noodles

I grew up in Hawaii where the only apples we picked were pineapples. I’m kidding. In all seriousness, I never had the pleasure of spending brisk fall days picking apples from actual trees until I moved to Wisconsin for college. If I hadn’t attended college in the Midwest I would have never met my college sweetheart and thus never obtained his mother’s recipe for Apple Noodle Casserole. Had you asked me 20 years ago if I would have ever considered combining apples with noodles I would have probably made a face similar to the one my 4-year-old displays when I … Continue reading

Did you take the quiz the other day? If you didn’t, you have to go back and read the quiz first because it’s not fair to read the answers first. Noodles have eggs in them which make the different from other pastas. #5. Kugel is a dessert made … Continue reading

Noodle Kugel

When I see the word “noodle” in a recipe, I am pretty much instantly confident I’m going to like it. Unless it contains ingredients that are too spicy for my taste, or seafood I’m not familiar with, I’ll generally file it away for future use. Why? Because noodles are delicious. They represent the ultimate in comfort food for me. And we all need a little comfort food now and then. I saw this recipe on television this morning. It looked delicious, and had apparently been created generations ago. What could be better? I’m a sucker for old family meals. A … Continue reading

When Cake is Good for Breakfast–Citrus Breakfast Cake

Cake in our house is a Sunday morning treat. I find that between trying to find all the kids’ Sunday school folders, and getting everyone dressed and looking presentable for church, having something easy for breakfast is a big help. Enter the Bundt cake. A Bundt cake is called so because it is made in a Bundt pan or a pan with a tube in the middle and fluted or decorated edges. The Bundt pan was originally made in response to a group of Jewish women who wanted an aluminum pan in which to bake kugel. The inventor, H. David … Continue reading

Why Does My Body Need Vitamin B6?

There are a lot of different vitamins and minerals listed on that multivitamin label — but do you know what each one does for your body? Vitamin B6 is found in three substances: pyridoxine, pyridoxamine, and pyridoxal. So what does this vitamin do for your body? Prevent heart disease — without pyridoxine, compounds in the blood can damage blood vessels. Pyridoxine also can help lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Relieve PMS — vitamin B6 can help reduce bloating, breast tenderness, and premenstrual acne. Reduce sensitivity to MSG — pyridoxine can relieve symptoms like headache, pain, nausea, and vomiting. Reduce … Continue reading

Beef Pot Pie

Who doesn’t love a good pot pie? And with so many variations, there’s a recipe for everyone. For some, pot pie is found exclusively in the frozen section (think Marie Callender’s here) and is served as an easy and hearty weeknight dinner. For others, the only way to go is homemade. Pot pies are a great way to make use of leftover meat. Personally, I enjoy making pot pies because they are fairly easy to prepare and usually something my whole family will enjoy. I have attempted making my own piecrust, but have found little difference between my version and … Continue reading
