Get Free Burritos for a Year from Chipotle!

My husband and I went to Chipotle for lunch today. That was when I first noticed the new sweepstakes that Chipotle is holding, with the help of Foursquare. Someone will win free burritos for an entire year. Ten people will win a “Burrito Party for 10”. Chipotle is a chain restaurant that sells gourmet burritos and tacos. If you are trying to avoid carbs, you can order a “burrito bowl”, and have them put in everything that would normally go into a burrito, minus the tortilla. Chipotle has been serving “food with integrity”, which means that they find the best … Continue reading

Go Mexican for Cinco de Mayo

For those of you looking to party like it’s 1999 on May 5th, consider hosting a Cinco de Mayo fiesta. The fifth day of the fifth month marks the Mexican army’s victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. In the United States, commemorations of the special occasion are typically marked with large parties that feature plenty of Mexican cuisine. If you can’t make it out to a local fiesta, then have one at home using these red-hot recipes: SPICY BEEF BURRITOS Ingredients: 1 1/4 pound ground beef 1 1/2 tablespoons chili powder 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin … Continue reading

Sizzling Steak Tacos with Mango Salsa

How often do you prepare steak for a weekday dinner? In a previous blog I revealed that making steak in the middle of the week is not a common occurrence in my home. But, during the summer months it’s not uncommon for some home cooks to throw a few steaks on the grill mid-week. If you are one of these lucky folks then you might consider making the following recipe. These Sizzling Steak Tacos are hot and spicy thanks to some ground cumin and garlic. The simple ingredients give the steak a welcome kick. Meanwhile, the fresh mango salsa has … Continue reading

Ready, Set, Grill—-Marinated Steaks and Chocolate Burritos

This is it. For the past few days I have been posting some of my family’s all-time favorite grill recipes. Chicken, shrimp, steak… you name it and we’ve probably tried to grill it in years past. But today is the day that I finally reveal what we will be grilling up this Memorial Day. I’m combining two of my favorite ingredients—-balsamic vinegar and rosemary–to make a killer marinade for steaks. It’s so simple and so incredibly delicious I wouldn’t be surprised if you decide to make it a summer staple. I will be topping our steaks with some sautéed mushrooms … Continue reading

Back to School with a Hot Breakfast

Back to school means crazy mornings, but that doesn’t also mean that you can’t serve your kids a hot breakfast. Although we do have our share of cereal mornings, I enjoy knowing that I got them out the door with something warm and filling most of the time. It also helps me control the ingredients and cut down on the preservatives and other additives that go into pre-prepared breakfast food. One of the tools that I use to help serve a hot breakfast despite a busy morning is my crockpot. I can either fill it with ingredients in the quite … Continue reading

National Frozen Food Day

Hold on to your fresh fruits and vegetables because today, March 6th, is National Frozen Food day. I have to laugh when I run across these on the internet, but they are a fun excuse to cook something completely different for dinner. The first frozen foods were sold to the general public in 1929 by Birdseye. The idea came when Clarence Birdseye was on a fur trapping expedition and saw that the native people of Labrador were freezing food to preserve it. An industry was born! I cannot imagine living without my freezer, frozen vegetables in the winter will carry … Continue reading

Getting Weighed at School

Well as I mentioned before my kids are doing the weight loss journey with me. We had an issue come up this week. Did you know that kids from 3rd – 12th grade are weighed at school now and their Body Mass Index is calculated? Well last year when they did it they sent a letter home with our kids saying if they were obese or not. When I got the letter home last year I called the school and asked them not to do it anymore. When my now 10 year old son did it last year he saw … Continue reading
