Cinnamon Roll Time!

What if it were so easy to make cinnamon rolls that you could do it in your bread machine? Bread machine cinnamon rolls are so delicious. They are much better than those prepackaged “tube” cinnamon rolls and take little extra effort when you use your bread machine. This morning, the kids are off of school for a teacher in service day. They had a late night, too, so I am hoping that they will sleep in a bit. I know however, that the aroma of the cinnamon rolls I am baking will probably wake them. We will be having a … Continue reading

The Health Benefits of Pumpkin

Full disclosure time: I love pumpkin. Pumpkin pie is my favorite holiday season dessert. My mom makes awesome pumpkin chocolate chip cookie bars. But I don’t only love it for dessert! Pumpkin soup, pumpkin curry… I love it all. Lucky for me, pumpkin is good for you. A gal can’t live on pumpkin pie alone (or pumpkin cheesecake, or pumpkin rolls, or pumpkin bread, or…) but it’s got some real health benefits. Pumpkin is full of fiber. Yay fiber! Fiber helps you feel full, fiber helps keep the digestive system working and happy. Pumpkin is an amazing source of vitamin … Continue reading

Old Fashioned Ice Cream Roll

Did your grandmother used to make this old fashioned summer treat? I must confess, I had never heard of it before until I stumbled upon a recipe in my Amish cookbook. I tried it and failed miserably. However, this version is a little more fool proof. The cake requires a few less ingredients and if you’re careful to follow the directions–it will come out beautifully. It will still require a good part of time, but it’s delicious and well worth the effort. Covered in a yummy caramel sauce, this is a can’t loose dessert–especially if you’re planning on entertaining this … Continue reading

Coffee Cake Cobbler

Meet my new favorite breakfast cake: the coffee cake cobbler. This is a great dish to bring to a pot luck. You are sure to get rave reviews. But what I especially like about this recipe is that you can use any flavors you want making the cake your own unique creation! While it’s not difficult to make, there are several steps and so you want to start early (or even the night before). You will need: 1 cup of butter, softened 1 cup sugar 2 eggs 3 teaspoons of vanilla 3 cups of flour 1 teaspoon of baking soda … Continue reading

Pumpkin Walnut Biscuits

I find that fresh homemade bread is an often overlooked part of the Thanksgiving meal. Most people either just buy bread, or buy frozen rolls to stick in the oven so that it seems homemade. After all, your oven may be in use for a whole bunch of other stuff. However, I find that homemade bread almost completes a meal. You can make bread (including these biscuits) a day or two before and they’ll still taste fresh. These biscuits are lightly sweetened but not too much so. This is a recipe from my favorite magazine, Family Fun. It is ‘sneaky … Continue reading

Breakfast Items that Freeze Well

One of the ways to save money is by avoiding the expensive cost of breakfast. You may be overspending on this important meal if you rely on convenience items, such as dry cereal, individual oatmeal packets, and store-bought frozen breakfast items, from sandwiches to pancakes. To reduce your spending in this area, consider preparing your own breakfast items and freezing them for later use. This way, you will always have a ready breakfast at hand, no matter how hectic the morning turns out to be. You can approach preparing freezer breakfast items in at least two different ways. You can … Continue reading

Affordable Fall Family Fun

The first day of autumn is just two weeks away, and just because Wal-Mart and Target already have their Christmas displays up doesn’t mean you should fast forward over this wonderful season. Fall is a great time to bond with your family in the great outdoors before Old Man Winter arrives and your kids refuse to move away from the warm TV. To help spice up the season, consider attending ones of the following fall-themed parades, festivals and kid-friendly events that won’t bust your family’s budget: Half Moon Art and Pumpkin Festival, San Francisco, California: On October 13-14, you can … Continue reading

A Seasonal Home Based Business Idea

If you love to bake and have a little extra time available to you this holiday season, you may want to stock up on sugar, flour, and other baking essentials and offer yourself to friends and acquaintances as a baker for hire. Everyone loves home made baked goods and want to have them on their holiday table, but many people are short on time. People who do not have the time to bake pies, cookies, and cakes themselves are often more than willing to pay someone else for home made baked goods instead of buying them at the store so … Continue reading
