Snowy Snack Mix in a Jar

by Mary Ann Romans | More from this Blogger

Looking for a gift in a jar that stands out from all of the others? Try this snack mix that has just enough sophistication that you'll be proud to give it out as a holiday gift. (The kids will gobble it up, too.) Although you can give it at any time, the holiday season really makes this gift in a jar shine.

You can package this gift in a jar in a number of ways. Try the traditional mason jar that you decorate yourself. You can paint festive designs on the jar, or simply add a scrap of blue snowflake material and a ribbon.

And now, on to the recipe.

There are no exact measurements with this snack mix. Just add as much as your container will hold. You are going to add the ingredients in layers. Make sure that you use enough of each ingredient to show it off. Vary the amount of each ingredient, so that some layers are thick and others are thinner, just to give it more visual appeal, as if the gift were sand art. I usually do about a cup each of the cereal, pretzels and white chocolate, a half cup of the nuts and a third cup of the fruits.

Into your gift, you can layer the following:

Crunchy cereal, such as Chex

Prezels, such as small twists

Peanuts, out of the shell, of course, or choose slivered almonds

Sweetened, dried cranberries

Candied pineapple, coarsely chopped

White chocolate chips.

A quart-sized Mason jar (canning jar) will yield about 3-1/2 cups of mix.

Write up the instructions for making the mix as follows:

Remove the white chocolate chips and pour the remaining ingredients into a large bowl. Mix well. Place the white chocolate chips in a bowl and microwave for 30 seconds. Add the melted chips to the rest of the mix and stir well. Spread the mixture on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper, and allow it to cool. Break the mix into smaller pieces and enjoy.
