Skewer Your Meat

Our barbecue gets plenty of use for cooking roasts as well as barbecuing. These recipes both go well on skewers on the barbecue, though you could also put them under the griller if you prefer. Although they take a bit of marinating time, you could be doing other things while they are marinating. Set a timer to remind you when they are ready. The advantage is they don’t take long to cook. HINT Although I have used beef in these two recipes you could just as easily use lamb or even chicken if you prefer. Spicy Beef Kebabs Ingredients I … Continue reading

Sweetly Good For You

Cranberries have become my husband’s and my new favorite fruit. The best thing is that they’re not only tasty but they’re good for you as well. Cranberries have long been known to be good for urinary tract infections but they also contain vitamin C and antioxidants. If that’s not enough, experts have discovered they can have an anti inflammatory effect and are good for fighting infection and can help with cholesterol problems. They are also good for your heart and can help prevent kidney stones. Sound like a wonder food, don’t they? They are. I’ve found them a helpful way … Continue reading

Note for the Day: Be Good to Yourself

I know that there is a good chance that you have been taught to be nice and good to other people—if you are like many single parents I know, you have probably mastered this lesson and are an absolute pro at looking after other people and taking care of myriad responsibilities. The question of the day, however, is how good are you are taking care of yourself? How are you at being good to yourself? I need to be reminded to be good to myself. This does not necessarily mean having a big helping of chocolate cake or soaking in … Continue reading

Arranging the Salad Plate

My husband and I have a salad almost every day for lunch. But I have to admit I am very particular about the way the salad is arranged on the plate. It’s a case of some ingredients go well together, in my opinion, and others definitely do not. It’s partly about color combinations together and partly to do with taste. Corned beef with pickle or roast beef or cold roast lamb or whatever cold meat we have cooked, always goes next to the slices of tomato. Near the tomato are the stuffed olives. The two of those taste incredible together. … Continue reading

Little Touches Make The Difference

When it comes to vegetables, carrots are another huge favorite. When I was pregnant I ate so many carrots I felt like Bugs Bunny. Carrots are good for your eyesight because they contain so much beta carotene which translates into Vitamin A. My children and I should never have anything wrong with our eyesight. It was certainly a better craving than many others I’ve heard of and less fattening than the other craving of custard tarts, which I also had. This was all before my gluten free diagnosis. Perhaps though, you are bored with just steamed carrots. A good suggestion … Continue reading

Make Mine Fruit

Fruit and vegetables experts agree, are good for you. They can cut the risk of some cancers, help in regards to heart disease and provide all sorts of benefits yet, they are sadly underrated by many people, which I find hard to understand. Fruit and vegetables are among my favorite foods. When it come to fruit, I’m a big wrap for apples, especially Jonathans because they have that tarter taste. But they don’t keep as well as some other apples, and have limited shelf life, which is why orchards have stopped growing them as much. Cameos and Sundowners, and Granny … Continue reading

The Joy of Food Shopping

Last Saturday we visited one of our favorite places- a food warehouse. From the moment you walk in the door the smell of Indian and Asian spices wafts around you. It’s great. We bought our share of gluten free products, shedded coconut, dried lentil and beans, a kilogram (which is over two pounds) of chili flakes and a large number of dried cranberries imported from the USA. The guy on the checkout as he rang our items up had a chuckle about the number of bulk packets of dried cranberries we bought. What can I say? Mick and I love … Continue reading

Free 8×10 Of Baby

I know I said yesterday that today’s blog would be about whether you need to replace your child’s car seat after a car accident, but I discovered a deal that I had to share with you, and it’s only valid today. I know that many parents take their children to get their pictures taken professionally. This usually happens at three months, six months, nine months, one year, and every subsequent birthday. I’ve never taken my daughter to get her picture taken professionally. I’m not sure why, but it probably is a combination of a few things. It could be the … Continue reading

Salad Using Cranberries

Following on from my blog the other day about the benefits of the humble little cranberry. Here is the recipe for a salad that is colorful, tastes great and is good for you too. Another advantage is it’s not expensive to make. Pumpkin, Cranberry and Almond Salad Ingredients 16 ounces pumpkin (I use Jap or Kent pumpkin but you could use butternut, whatever you like and or what is on special) 5-6 ounces baby spinach leaves half cup slivered almonds 1 cup dried cranberries (I use dried because I have never seen fresh cranberries here in Australia. Those I use … Continue reading

The Power of Christmas Music

We’ve been taught about the power of hymns to bring us closer to the Savior. As I’ve been driving around town running my errands the last few days, I’ve also found that certain Christmas music also has that power – the car is one of the only places where I’m really able to listen to music and hear the lyrics. I’d like to share with you a couple of my favorite Christmas songs and explain just why they impact me so greatly. The first is “O, Holy Night.” I have loved this hymn for as long as I can remember. … Continue reading
