Gluten-Free Recipe – Lemon Bars

It isn’t easy to find foods that are gluten-free, especially if you are seeking pastries and other baked goods. This means it is time to try your hand at baking these treats yourself, from scratch. My husband and I recently made some delicious gluten-free lemon bars. Here is how we did that. We are fortunate enough to have a lemon tree in our tiny little backyard. The tree produces fruit nearly all year round, probably because we live in sunny California. Earlier this week, we noticed that there were a ton of lemons that were ripe, and ready to be … Continue reading

Lemon Seed Cake

Angela started me thinking about lemon recipes, especially given my post on the home blog today. Like Angela I am a big fan of lemons in just about anything, so I thought I’d share with you another favorite lemon recipe. This cake has a slightly unusual combination but it’s one I’ve found people really like, mainly because it’s something a bit different. It doesn’t need icing or frosting, as it has syrup poured over it. Of course as usual, this is a gluten free version. So if you are not gluten free, then simply substitute the self raising gluten free … Continue reading

Sick of Thinking About Food

I probably shouldn’t say this on the food blog, but sometimes I get sick of thinking about food. Mostly it is what we will eat for dinner that is the problem. Breakfast and lunch are usually much the same. Cereal with yoghurt and fruit, usually dried cranberries for breakfast and lunch is salad with some form of cold meat like corned silverside or roast lamb for lunch. But dinner, that’s another story. It’s often where I get stumped. Sometimes I am just so over thinking about what to cook. A frequent conversation in our house goes like this. ‘What do … Continue reading

A Good Basic Recipe

Starting with a good basic recipe is important. From that point it’s easy to branch out and add your own individual touches or experiment. I’m a great one for experimenting in the kitchen. That’s often how the best recipes are created. This week I made the recent chocolate hedgehog slice I gave you. This was one Mick had made initially, but of course when I got near it I couldn’t leave it alone.Partly it was to do with what I didn’t have in the pantry at the time and sheer laziness in not feeling like going up to the shops … Continue reading

Don’t Be Fooled By Size

Sometimes we can be fooled by thinking the biggest is the best. It ‘Ain’t Necessarily So,’ to quote an old Normie Rowe song from the 1960s. Lately I’ve been having orange juice with breakfast each day in an attempt to build up vitamin C and not end up with colds and flu. Recently we bought some navel oranges. Large and orange they looked beautiful. They were sadly disappointing. One large orange and I was lucky to get even half a glass of orange juice from it. At first I thought it was just me but even with the electric juicer, … Continue reading

Food and Allergies- A Solution

For years we’ve been hearing the benefits of honey. When I was a child, my mother used honey and lemon juice for sore throats. Honey for many people is a great addition to a recipe and can be substituted for sugar. But some of us are allergic to honey. In my case it causes tinnitus. Sounds bizarre but I have proved it over time to be true. Tinnitus is that constant ringing noise in your ears. In my case it sounded like I had a steam train in my head. It gets worse when it is quiet and makes it … Continue reading

Every Home Should Have One

What is it every home should have? Every home should have a lemon tree. There’s something about fresh lemon juice that leaves the bottled kind for dead. The smell of fresh lemons in the house is also great. Added to washing or water for washing floors it leaves a lovely, fresh smell. We have always tried to have a lemon tree. The only place we couldn’t get one to grow was when we lived in Orange and though people suggested the type of lemon that didn’t mind the cold climate, we couldn’t keep one alive. I found it very hard … Continue reading
