The Store that Ruined Christmas Dinner

I am mad. Boy am I mad. Late Christmas morning, after the gifts had been frantically opened, the Toyland town was all around the Christmas Tree and the kids were happily settled in to playing with their new gifts, it was time to get Christmas dinner started. The potatoes were already peeled and in the pot, ready to become our famous mashed potatoes that were so good that a friend is still convinced that we put some sort of addictive substance in the recipe to make him crave them in his sleep. The pumpkin pie was already in the fridge, … Continue reading

Preserve Your Family Recipes in a Family Cookbook

As I was making turkey burgers the other night, I paused to wonder whether my son will ever ask me how I make them. He’s only nineteen months old, so it will be a while before I show him how to cook. To his credit, he can say “burger” already and it sounds really cute when he says it. I would like to think that he will someday be an ace in the kitchen, just like his mom and dad. When the time comes to teach him how to cook, I want to make sure that he learns all about … Continue reading

Getting Less Bread for Your Money

Grocery shrinkage is nothing new. Manufacturers slowly alter the size of the products they provide without telling you or altering the packaging. This way they can provide less for the same money, or in some cases, even charge you more. I am well aware of these practices, but in some cases it has gone into the ridiculous. This week’s grocery trip included bread, as it usually does. I do make a lot of homemade bread, but with a larger family who takes lunches, I can’t keep up with the volume of bread needed. However, this week’s experience has me wondering … Continue reading

Problem Food for Pets

We’ve always been able to feed our dogs table scraps thinking we were being kind to them. Now we have discovered feeding pets too many table scraps can be no good. This Christmas we encountered a problem. It seems that the off cuts of ham and pork that were fed to one little pooch ended up giving her a case of constipation. Since we had been encountered this once before with our other dog and it turned into a major drama, we were very quick to react. Of course it happened on a public holiday over the Christmas period when … Continue reading

Crispin: The Pig Who Had It All – Ted Dewan

Is it possible to indulge your piggy just a little too much? Yes, it is, as we’ll soon find out by reading “Crispin: The Pig Who Had It All.” Crispin Tamworth was a very spoiled little pig, and at Christmas time, things got even worse. He would receive the most extravagant gifts, but he always grew bored with them quickly, or they would break. Every cool computer game, every wonderful ride-on toy – you name it, he would get it, and get bored, and it would break. What a neverending cycle! But just this last Christmas, something was different. When … Continue reading
