The Farmer’s Market Part I

This summer has brought wonderful opportunities to spend time outside enjoying some of the things make the Midwest a great place to live. Because of the early start of the growing season, our local farmer’s market boasted fresh homegrown produce early in the season as well. I have always been a huge fan of the farmer’s market. Being able to get high quality produce and other goods that are produced locally improves my outlook on life in general. Needless to say, I have been taking full advantage of our Saturday morning farmer’s market this summer. Unlike my typical errand running, … Continue reading

The Funnel Cakes are Not Your Friends!

The Atkins diet is not an incredibly difficult diet to follow – until you walk out the door of your home. Suddenly, there are all these foods that are not appropriate for you to eat right now. Spending the day at a Fair can be an exercise in determination, and will test your ability to avoid the temptation to eat foods that you shouldn’t be eating right now. In the time since I started the Atkins diet, I have visited my local Farmers’ Market, and I spent a day at the Renaissance Faire. Each experience presented me with foods that … Continue reading

Staying On Atkins At the Buffet

The Atkins diet allows for a fairly wide variety of food choices. There are limitations, however, especially when you are still in Phase 1 of the diet. I believe it was me who suggested it. … Continue reading

Sneaking in The Garlic

I love garlic. I grew up with it practically as a staple. My husband on the other hand grew up in household where black pepper was an exotic spice that was only used on special occasions. When we first married, he told me that he didn’t like garlic. He still sort of confesses to that, even though he knows that he gets garlic in something or other at least once or twice a week and enjoys the dishes. My sons are the same way. They profess to not like garlic, but they gobble it up anyway. My daughter would ask … Continue reading

The Astronomical Price of Strawberries

Okay, by now I am getting used to the cost of food rising everywhere, but when thing rise more than 100 percent in a single week, it can be a bit intimidating. Such is the case of strawberries here in my local town. Exactly two weeks ago, I did some shopping for produce at our local farmer’s market. The prices there aren’t the best I can get, but I always know that the food is fresh and in good shape. Having to throw out produce from our grocery store lately, I figure extra price is worth not having any waste. … Continue reading
