A Kinder, Gentler, Healthier Cup of Coffee

Good news, coffee lovers: coffee may just be good for you! Outside of caffeine addiction and calorie-laden specialty drinks, a cup of java does have some health benefits for us. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, International Journal of Cancer, and Prevention magazine all agree: two or three cups of caffeinated drinks (including coffee) each day can give more than your energy level a boost! Cut your risk of dying from heart disease by thirty one percent or more. Lower your risk of developing colon cancer. Premium blends may be chock full of cancer-fighting antioxidants (some more than others). Want … Continue reading

The Seventh and Eighth Weeks Post Partum

Seven weeks out from my daughter’s birth, I seemed to have hit a bit of a rut. While I am still feeling great, my sweets intake has increased due to recent celebrations and my motivation to exercise seems to be dwindling a little bit too. My diet started veered off course when I put together a party for my daughter’s baptism. I made the famous red velvet cupcakes. They were both tasty and calorie heavy especially with the cream cheese frosting. After that I made my thanksgiving pumpkin pie and pumpkin bread, using the sweet pumpkins I had processed and … Continue reading

A Healthy (and Sanitary) Kitchen

Where and how you store your stuff can make a big difference in how clean and healthy your kitchen is. Here are some tips to keep things sanitary — and help keep you and your family healthy. Don’t put your pocketbook on the kitchen counter. Studies from the University of Arizona have found up to ten thousand bacteria per square inch on the bottoms of purses! Spoil Your Sweet Tooth with My Ghirardelli White Chocolate Chunk Blondies

Martha Stewart says that when you make things with chocolate in them, if you want really fantastic results, you have to use the best ingredients that you have available. Ghirardelli, in my opinion, is the best chocolate that is readily available. Domingo Ghirardelli (pronounced: GEAR-ar-deli), was an immigrant from Italy who thought he’d strike it rich in the gold rush. Thankfully for us, he didn’t and instead began a company to sell supplies and treats to miners. He was destroyed by one of San Francisco’s great fires in 1851, rebuilt in 1852 and had a series of failed businesses. But … Continue reading

Maple Oat Scones

I have mentioned before that Sunday morning in our house is ‘baked goods’ morning. I almost always bake something for Sunday morning breakfast. It makes everyone’s life easier because the kids can get up, grab breakfast on their own and then finish getting ready for church. Trying to get seven people out the door is no easy task when you’re on a time crunch. The problem with ‘baked goods’ morning is that it is not exactly the healthiest food in the world. Lately, I have taken to making baked oatmeal Sunday mornings but one of the problems with being an … Continue reading
