Veal Paprika

Veal is one of those meats people either love or they can’t stand. My mother couldn’t eat veal. It made her sick. I love it. I used to buy a side of veal for the freezer. That was back in the days before veal prices got ridiculously expense. These days I mostly buy a shoulder to roast in the barbecue. I might cut some of the shoulder to use in this dish before cooking the roast. Otherwise if I see veal steak cheap I buy it. You can also use veal chops if you find them on special. But instead … Continue reading

Rich Beef With Olives in the Crock Pot

Since over that side of the world you’re getting into Fall or Autumn as we Aussies call it, I thought I’d start sharing some of the increasing collection of great crock pot meals I’ve been trying lately. Many are adoptions form Slow Cooker by Sally Wise. I’ve just added my own bits and deices, mainly because I can’t seem to follow a recipe without fiddling and experimenting. Of course, I have also been known to make them up from scratch, but that will be the next recipe. This time here’s a rich beef casserole adapted from that Slow Cooker cook … Continue reading

The Unthinkable Happened

The unthinkable happened. In the middle of cooking a meal the other night, our crock pot died. It was working when I’d turned it on and when I checked an hour or so later. The next time I went to add another ingredient, it was cold. I had no idea how long it had been off. I hastily transferred the meal to a casserole dish and put it in the oven. As I thought about it, I got more than my money’s worth out of my slow cooker. It must have been a good twenty years old and has plenty of … Continue reading

Tangy Lemon Meringue Pie

Ever since I discovered the gluten free frozen pastry, I’ve been finding it a great help in the kitchen. Thanks to friends I have a lovely supply of fresh lemons at present. Our lemon tree is still in its early stages of producing, so the most we get is a couple. Last night when we were having guests for dinner I made lemon meringue pie which is my husband’s favorite dessert. HINT I’ve already given you one recipe for lemon meringue pie but this one could be even nicer. It is very tangy, which I love. The sweetness of the … Continue reading

Thai Chicken Rolls

For weeks my daughter has been telling me her friend in Sydney, who is also gluten free, bought gluten free puff pasty. I’d rung and visited many shops in our area and had no success. I was beginning to think it was a figment of someone’s imagination. I have neither the time nor inclination to fiddle and make my own pastry. So you can imagine my delight when recently I came across the gluten free frozen pastry sheets in our local supermarket. Needless to say I was thrilled to bits and told them so. The guy on the check-out confirmed … Continue reading

Homemade Holiday Gifts in a Bottle

In a previous blog I revealed that my best friend from Hawaii was forgoing her holiday baking and opting to prepare homemade salsas and a variety of dressings to give as holiday gifts. She’s done with the salsa and is now in full dressing mode. The following recipes are the ones she is using for the remainder of her holiday gifts. Frankly, I thought it was a wonderful idea and wished I had thought of it first. With the push these days to eat healthier the dressings are a wonderful alternative to the traditional holiday candies, cakes, cookies and chocolate-covered … Continue reading
