Analyze This

You know that dream where everyone in the world hates you, but somehow you gain an invitation to compete on Iron Chef America where the secret ingredient is barley and one of the guest judges is Anderson “I love me some Crack Pie” Cooper, and you burn fish so badly that it looks like chicken until you pull back the skin and a sea of pin bones are revealed, and suddenly the entire kitchen goes up in flames… What do you mean you don’t remember that one? I get that one all the time, which probably explains why my 8-year-old … Continue reading

Study Links Mercury Levels in Mom to ADHD in Child

A new study has connected the mercury levels in women shortly after they gave birth with an increased risk that their child would develop ADHD by the time he or she turned eight years old. We know that it is best that women who are pregnant avoid fish that contains mercury. This is another reason why. You have probably heard that women who are pregnant should avoid eating certain kinds of fish in order to avoid ingesting mercury during pregnancy. In general, this means avoiding swordfish, shark, tilefish, and king mackerel, because those are known to contain high mercury levels. … Continue reading

Cats Eating People Food

Yesterday a good friend of mine posted on her Facebook that she caught her two cats eating coleslaw. It’s not the first time her cats have gone after people food; one ate a strawberry last week, and when they were kittens she had to lock them in a room when I’d have lunch at her house. Otherwise they’d jump up on the table, put their paws in our water glasses, and otherwise view our plates as their personal buffet. When I think about it, I can recall many incidents of cats I knew eating people food. My old roommate’s cat … Continue reading

Life’s Not Fair, Get Over It

Guilt, guilt, guilt. Sometimes I think I should change my name to include that one word. When I divorced my husband, my daughter’s father, I  had a tremendous amount of guilt. What had I done? How would it affect Hailey? Would this cause her to rebel more as a teenager? If she rebels it will be ALL MY Fault. If she turns to drugs or alcohol, it will be ALL MY FAULT, I tore her family apart. I know I didn’t do it by myself. The destruction of my marriage was a joint venture, my ex husband and I both … Continue reading

When Parents are Ill-Informed

See how I cleverly got around using the s-word (the six-lettered one) and “parents” in the same title? Believe me; it took a lot of restraint, especially after hearing yet another news story about moms and dads who are running from store to store desperately buying up potassium iodide as a preventative measure against radiation exposure. Did I mention that these procreating geniuses live in California and New York—-not Japan. According to news reports, potassium iodide tablets are flying off store shelves in California (and in states as far away as New York) amidst concern that Japan’s nuclear crisis poses … Continue reading

Learning through Example

Parents are the biggest influence on a child’s life. A parent’s job is to mold and shape a child to function productively in society. While, family values vary from family to family, most want at the core the same things for their children. I have yet to meet a well intentioned parent who did not want a happy, compassionate, well-rounded, and wise child. We may want a doctor or a lawyer in the family but above all we want healthy and happy children. We also want children who show proper discernment and made good decisions in reference to time management. … Continue reading

Why Does My Body Need Phosphorus?

Phosphorus is a mineral that has many useful roles for the body. It is used in energy metabolism, to help the body use some B-complex vitamins, for muscle and nerve function, and for kidney function. This mineral is essential to the formation of bones and teeth, and bone and tooth health throughout all stages of life. What Causes Food Allergies?

Food allergies can be life threatening. For a child who is allergic to peanuts, eggs, soy, shellfish or milk, the vigilance required by the parent can be overwhelming. Is there any way that you can help prevent food allergies in your child? Pediatricians and scientists have been trying to figure out why there has been such a great rise in the number of young children who have food allergies, especially severe food allergies. There are a couple of theories that so far haven’t been proven. One theory says that it is simply a matter of more proper diagnosis being made. … Continue reading

The Benefits of Commitment

If you are married then you must be committed to your spouse, right? actually, this is not necessarily the case. Many couples find themselves having difficulty truly committing, even after the marriage ceremony. Taking two lives and blending them together without losing individuality can be difficult. Perhaps this is why many marriages fail within the first two years. Making a commitment to someone means closing the door on other competing possibilities. In other words, no more fishing in the sea for another partner. While this can be a joy, many people also find it very scary. In our society, we … Continue reading
