It is a good selection of different kinds of food, from soup to desert, although I have to say that I am partial to the desert. It is a 5 layer chocolate cake, with chocolatey whipped frosting and … Continue reading

Bad Habits

Bad habits…we all have them.  But bad habits in fitness can make losing weight difficult. The problem with habits is that they are difficult to break.  So a new way to approach this is to look at it as not having to break habits but developing new ones.  It sounds more positive, doesn’t it? Let’s start with some bad habits when it comes to food.  How many times does your family get fast food?  It’s gotten so bad that eating out once-a-week is looked at as healthy.  One of my goals for the New Year is going to be cutting … Continue reading

Planning Special Moments

In the past two weeks I’ve looked at planning romantic moments for your spouse, making them feel special, and how to cope with missing your spouse even when he or she is more or less around. How do all of these things come together? In me trying to plan special things for my husband. Now that Jon has completed grad school I want to do something special for him. Parties he hast to host are too draining for him, so that’s out. I thought of the perfect idea: I’d bake him a cake. Not just any cake, but a black … Continue reading

Could Too Much Milk Cause Colic-Like Symptoms In Your Baby?-Part II

While I’m no expert on this subject of overactive letdown and oversupply of milk, I’m excited to share this information with other Moms! I’m still trying to figure this all out myself, because my hope is that my baby who is suffering from the same symptoms I spoke about in Part I of this article, is actually having a problem with my supply, and NOT a problem with the foods I eat. However, in my case, I am currently cutting out dairy, soy, chocolate, corn, eggs, and nuts. I also have a prescription for an acid reflux medication if dietary … Continue reading

Pancakes for a Crowd: Improved Recipe

Making pancakes from scratch is so easy that I never understand why people by the boxed mix. Making them from scratch is much cheaper, especially when you have to feed a crowd or like to do some advanced freezer cooking in order to serve a hot breakfast during the week when things get hectic. It is bulk cooking made easy. While I liked my bulk pancake recipe before, I decided to work on making it even better. So yesterday, I tried a few things and came up with what I think is the absolute best pancakes for a crowd recipe. … Continue reading

Serve Foods From Christmas Carols this Christmas

Want to try something a little bit unique at your family gathering this Christmas? You could serve some of the foods that are mentioned in lyrics from popular Christmas carols. This could lead to a family sing-a-long, or a culturally interesting set of appetizers. Christmas music evokes strong emotions in many people. You are either someone who loves it, (and cannot get enough of it), or you are someone who hates it, (and rushes to change the radio station whenever a carol starts playing). Either way, it is very likely that you have memorized the lyrics to several Christmas carols, … Continue reading

St. Nick’s Tradition Continues

Yes, St. Nick made a stop at my house, despite the fact that my children are just a few months from turning 13, 15 and 18. I personally don’t believe you can be too old for magic. Okay, they don’t actually believe in St. Nick. But perhaps it really is time to put the kibosh on this annual celebration. After all, who puts in requests for St. Nick items? My children do. Still…I have so much fun filling those stockings. But with the way some attitudes had been going around, I was threatening to cancel St. Nick. Then at one … Continue reading

Baked Gifts

Yesterday began the baking extravaganza. Every year my best friend and I spend two full days baking and freezing for Christmas. We make so many cookies that by the end of the two days we never want to see another cookie. It’s so much fun though and our kids look forward to it every year. As you can imagine it’s quite a mess. At the end of the day the kitchen looks like a bakery exploded so through the years we have come up with some ways to keep the mess under control. The number one thing is to keep … Continue reading

Feeling Under The Weather

Who takes care of you when you are sick? When I was married I never worried too much when I was sick. My ex husband was still going to work every day and when he came home Hailey was fed and the house was somewhat maintained. There was some catching up to do when I felt better but it never got too out of hand. As a single mom, being sick is a real pain in the rear end! I was reminded of this when my back, my good and faithful back that has never bothered me, decided that it … Continue reading

Have Fun With Goodie Bags

I heart Oriental Trading Company. If it weren’t for the catalog-based business I would have never been able to pull-off my daughter’s circus-themed seventh birthday party. Of course, when you’ve got 30 six and seven year olds running amuck you don’t really need elephants, clowns and acrobats to create a circus-like atmosphere. I shudder to think how our pint-sized guests would have reacted if they were forced to leave the party goodie bag-less. Oh the horror! Fortunately, my child’s birthday had a traditional theme. Consequently, it was easy for me to purchase a bunch of trinkets from Oriental Trading Company. … Continue reading
