Your Favorite Holiday Pie

When the desert comes out around the holiday dinner table do you have to be quick to make sure that you get a piece of your favorite pie? Throwing a napkin in someone's face can help you win that slice, although I admit, the practice isn't very nice (worse still if it is a used napkin).

Usually, we wind up with too much of a certain type of pie and not enough of another. So, you may just want to have an informal survey of your relatives and friends to see exactly how much and which types of pies to bake for your holiday gathering.

If you are a bit shy about asking, you can always rely on the recent survey done by Woman's Day Magazine. The magazine surveyed readers about their favorite pie and came up with some interesting results.

Apple pie came on top at 18 percent of all of the votes.

Lemon meringue scored second place with 16 percent.

Pumpkin pie (our family favorite) and pecan pie were tied for third place with 14 percent.

Cherry pie was next with 12 percent, although the survey doesn't say if this was with sweet or sour cherries.

Next to last was another tie. Blueberry pie and Chocolate mousse pie were both ranked with 9 percent.

Finally, strawberry rhubarb came in dead last at 8 percent, so be sure to leave that one out, unless of course, it is a personal favorite.

Missing from the survey was key lime pie, which according to my husband is "exotic," "something you don't get every day," and a pie that should definitely find its way to the table.

Not far from us is a thriving Amish community. Shoo Fly Pie is abundant, although a bit sweet for many tastes.

True from scratch apple pie can be a little difficult to make, while pumpkin is pretty easy, especially if you use canned pumpkin. Of course, you can always go to your local bakery or farmer's market and get enough pie to do your own informal survey, complete with a tasting.
