Double Lemon Cake

I remember once upon a time for my birthday, my husband made me a lemon cake with lemon frosting. I remember it well because that is exactly the type of cake that he wants. Me? I like a good German chocolate cake. We get a good laugh over it now but rest assured I will never forget that his favorite cake is lemon with lemon frosting. He’d probably like lemon drops on top too. So when I stumbled across this recipe in my Cook Pleasures magazine, into the ‘try’ pile it went. We had it tonight for dessert and it … Continue reading

Spring Garden Party

For Easter, my 7-year-old daughter received a small terra cotta pot filled with plastic grass, seed packets, a hand rake, some gloves and a bunch of chocolate flowers. The candy is gone, but we’re now anxiously waiting for peppers to sprout from the pot. The cute gift came courtesy of my sister-in-law, and was nice change from the traditional Easter baskets. However, I think it would be equally appropriate to hand out as a favor at a spring garden party. In fact, you could go one better and have young guests decorate the pots with glitter glue, paint, markers, sequins, … Continue reading

Shower Curtain Games

My homeschooling method should be described as “kid at heart”. I love playing games and coming up with creative ways to teach lessons. One medium that I have found to encourage educational play along with being frugally sound is the use of shower curtains. That’s right, shower curtains! You can find shower curtain liners at your local store for under $5.00. Once you have an opaque or clear shower curtain, you simply need a colorful supply of permanent markers. Your project will determine how many colors you want to have on hand for your shower curtain games. To keep your … Continue reading

Creme Brulee Tart

Real men do cook. And some of them do so very well. My friend and former colleague Mike is one of them. Mike is a married father of three boys and is one of the only guys I know who would rather go to a gourmet cooking class than to a pro football game. In fact, he is probably the only man I know who has asked for (and received) a creme brulee torch for Father’s Day. (Forget power tools; give that man a device to caramelize sugar.) He’s a great guy and his cooking is even better. He broke … Continue reading

The Great TRICK-or-TREAT Divide: Juvenile Diabetes and Halloween

Do you have a child with juvenile diabetes, or a child on a special diet? Or do you just hate the idea of your son or daughter eating a lot of candy? With Halloween approaching, you might be wondering how to deal with the whole trick-or-treating routine. How do you allow your child to participate, and still limit the sugary indulgences? Note: Children with juvenile diabetes can eat candy! It’s not forbidden for a child in good control. You simply must count the carbohydrates into their meal plan, or give enough insulin to cover the amount. Still, a whole lot … Continue reading
